  1. A LEGACY OF FAITHFULNESSTruth Motivating Faithfulness2 Timothy 2:8-13

  2. 1. Preeminence of the Lord (v. 8) – Remember Jesus Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel

  3. 1. Preeminence of the Lord (v. 8) Hebrews 12:3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. 1 Peter 2:20-21 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps

  4. 1. Preeminence of the Lord (v. 8) 2 features of Christ work and person: > Christ resurrection [God’s power is triumphant] - Divinity Romans 1:4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

  5. 1. Preeminence of the Lord (v. 8) 2 features of Christ work and person: > Christ resurrection [God’s power is triumphant] – Divinity > Christ messianic qualifications [God’s promises are true] - Humanity Luke 1:32-33 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

  6. 1. Preeminence of the Lord (v. 8) Hymn King of my life I crown you now, Yours shall the glory be; Lest I forget your thorn-crowned brow, Lead me to Calvary. Lest I forget Gethsemane, Lest I forget your agony, Lest I forget your love for me, Lead me to Calvary.

  7. 2. Power of the Word (v. 9) - Word of God is not bound for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!

  8. 3. Purpose of the work(vv. 9-10) - Reason for Paul’s suffering 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. * Purpose clause > “that (in order that) they also may obtain the salvation”

  9. 3. Purpose of the work(vv. 9-10) Romans 10:13-17 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

  10. 4. Promise of Reward (2:11-13) - Reward is certain “The saying is trustworthy, for:” (v.11a) 5 times in pastoral epistles - Truism in the early church - commonly known and believed - possibly a hymn

  13. 4. Promise of Reward (2:11-13) 4 conditional clauses (1) “If we have died with him, we will also live with him” (v. 11a) > Spiritual death > Physical death (martyrdom) – The martyr’s hope is eternal life after death.

A person who fails to endure and hold onto his confession of Christ will deny Him, because he never belonged to Christ at all.” John MacAuthor Mark 13:13 He who stand firm to the end will be saved.” Not because salvation is a reward of endurance, but because endurance is the hall mark of the saved. (4) “if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.” (v. 13) 2 Interpretations: > Our faithlessness cannot in any way detract from the Son of God and his glory. > Christ cannot disown Himself;therefore He will not deny even unprofitable members of His own body.
