Make note of the following changes: --The due date for Assignment #1 (the narrative about your definition of multiculturalism and social equity) is: Wed., January 28th --The due date for your Introductions is: Wed., February 4th --Dr. Seloni’s Office Hours: M 2:30-4:30, T: 2:30-4:30 and W 2:30-3:30.

What are the ideas that you gleaned from Peggy McIntosh’s article? • White privilege and she felt guilty about being white. • Whites having unfair advantages, whites might take certain privileges for granted. • Acknowledging white privileges. • Minorities and judgment. • Whites thinking their lives are more neutral. • Appresiveness were unconsious and all privilidges were not all the time noticed.

  7. Social equity and diversity • How do you define social justice? • How can you implement equity in your everyday life? • Think about research topics that will include social equity and diversity issues.

  8. Free writing: Building an Interest Inventory • Look at page 29. • Create a couple of columns on a piece of paper (CONTROVERSIES, HISTORY, TRENDS AND OTHER TITLES THAT YOU MAY LIKE TO FOCUS) • Brainstorm a list of words that come to your mind. • Circle the item(s) that interests you the most. • For the item you circled, generate a list of questions as many as you can.

  9. Example topics related to social issues: Broad Topics: Feminism, Race Relations, Abortion, Immigration Specific Topics and Research Questions: How are women represented in media? What is the achievement rate of minority kids in public schools?

  10. Assignments • Continue exploring a topic that interest you. • If you found one, start exploring about that topic • Read the following articles: Defining racism: “Can we talk?” by Beverly Daniel Tatum pp. 79-82 Moving beyond White guilt by Amy Edgington pp. 127-128 • Read Curious Researcher: 39-55:
