  3. Chapter 1 Questions? • Why is the first sentence strange? What does it set up? It shows the magnitude of how far technology of that time has come along. Usually 34 story building are not “squat and grey”. B. It tells the reader up front that the whole story takes place in a “small, grey” building. C. It foreshadows by telling the reader how the society lives. We can see that their life is not very vibrant if they consider large buildings to be dull and boring.

  5. Chapter 1 Questions? • What is the meaning of the World State’s motto “COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, STABILITY?” Communize, identify, and stabilize the World and its inhabitants B. Everybody be apart of the community, by understanding their identity in the community, to produce stability throughout the community C. Community, identity, and stability all allow individuals to succeed in life

  7. Chapter 1 Questions? • Why does the fertilizing room look so cold, when it is actually hot inside? What goes on there? The room is all white and has a wintery finesse. Within, workers take ova from 30% of women in the society. B. Cold and bitter people do cold things; therefore, the room has a chilly appearance. Within, workers are killing embryo’s by giving them disease. C. The room is sterile, full of metal, and is very tidy. It appears as if a scientific lab would, untouched. Within, workers incubate embryos.

  11. Chapter 1 Questions? • How do people know who they are in this society? They never do find out who they are B. They know by finding what they are best at. When they turn 5, they are given a chance to find their niche. C. The Government labels each individual at conception

How is it an instrument “of social stability?” Using the Bokanovsky process allows everyone to feel special because they all look alike. It makes it where everyone looks the same = stability. B. Using the Bokanovsky process allows scores of identical twins to be produced. It allows no judgment and acts as a way to create a numerous and efficient amount of humans. C. Using the Bokanovsky process allows the Government to create an abundant amount of humans to position into the work force.

  15. Chapter 1 Questions? • What is the significance of replacing God with Ford? Why Ford? Ford is the Big Brother in this society. They just came up with the name to get rid of religion and God. B. Ford rebuilt the world after the war and thus became an icon to the new society demands. C. Ford is the creator of the assembly line, and therefore, he replaces the original CREATOR.

  17. Chapter 2 Questions? • What work does the conditioning do? Who gets conditioned? How does hypnopaedia work? Conditioning builds up the children’s muscles so that they can train for the jobs they want in the future B. Conditioning creates instinctive morals in children while asleep or unconscious. If done properly, it should be imbedded by adulthood or earlier. C. Conditioning allows the Alphas to gain their intelligence at a young age by listening to classical music.

  19. Chapter 2 Questions? • Why condition the Deltas to hate nature but love outdoor sports? To give them the dilemma to stay inside or outside; thus allowing their brains to over analyze the analytical thought process (good thing for society) B. To show that flowers and books do not have and should not have emotions C. To allow them to not get distracted by the simple things in life, and to consume the travel into the country to continue working

  21. Chapter 2 Questions? • How does time work in this book? History? Why does Ford say “History is Bunk?” A.F. = Agricultural Fertilization. In this society history is still taught from the past and is accepted by the government. History is gone, but still remains within. B. A.F. = After the Fact. In this society history is known of, but not talked about on a daily basis. History is gone, and we have to understand and preserve some of it. C. A.F. = After Ford. In this society history has been filtered out and exempt from traditional life. History is gone, and we want nothing to do with it.

  23. Chapter 2 Questions? • How do the students demonstrate their own conditioning? When they hear “silence, silence”, they get on their tippy toes and exit quietly B. They copy word for word in their notes when the Director lectures throughout the company C. They ask questions that show individuality when they are being taught how to create humans in test tubes
