  3. Our Mission: To help parents work together with teachers to learn how to support their child academically at home in fun, simple, and easy ways. The collaboration between teachers, parents, and students will create an ideal learning community.

  4. The mission of the Howard County Public School System is to ensure excellence in teaching and learning so that each student will participate responsibly in a diverse and changing world.

  5. Scary Statistics...

  6. Howard County’s population is very diverse in needs, backgrounds, and cultures. Parent Power Club will help unify the diverse population of parents in each school to form a community. Parent Power Club

  10. We do not want Howard County to be part of those statistics.

  11. We need to create Parent Power Club now.

  12. Moodle is a course management system that we will use to run Parent Power Club. It is a web application that educators can use to create effective online learning sites. http://moodle.org/

  13. There are a lot of parents who want to help their child academically but do not know how. Through a distance learning program on Moodle parents will be able to connect with teachers and other parents in their school through discussion boards that will focus on reading, writing, and math resources and activities.

  14. Parents will be able to use a discussion board to ask questions and share tips or stories that worked well with their child while doing an activity. Teachers will post suggested activities for parents to do with their child.

  15. There are a lot of easy things that parents can do at home that will boost their child's academic growth... but many parents do not know what they are! Our goal is to teach parents how to boost their child's academic growth and work together as a community to increase student success. Ou

  16. Some Simple Activities Are: Grocery shop together. Talk about math that relates to your child's academic level in the store. (Colors, shapes, decimals, money, etc.) Let your child play ACADEMIC games online at home or at the library. Limit the amount of time your child can play video games or watch tv and encourage them to read EVERY DAY!!

  17. More Activities: Take your child to the library often and let them choose books to read that excite them. Let your child read aloud to you and ask them questions as they read. (We will have a great list of questions provided for you.) Encourage your child write a creative story and draw pictures to illustrate it.

  18. More Activities: Play board games and card games together. (A list of games and directions will be provided.) Go on scavenger hunts around the house incorporating math. (3D figures, angles, things that are about 3 inches long etc.) Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts in car rides or any free time you have. Download ACADEMIC apps on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad for your children to play! (If you have one.)

  20. Parent Participation We will advertise our program through posters around the community and school, on our school website, and through newsletters. We will have a raffle for parents who complete the program including prizes such as school supplies and gift cards. We will provide food and interpreters at the initial meeting and at the final celebration.

  21. Moodle Although Moodle will be new for many parents in the county, it is very user friendly. There will be an introductory session in person that parents will be encouraged to attend that will go over all of the basics of the program. The same information will also be available to the parents through a podcast posted on the Moodle page.

  22. Moodle Parents will be able to access a frequently asked questions page for any difficulties they may encounter. Parents will be able to post questions to our Help Me forum, where other parents or teachers can respond.

  23. Access to Technology We will encourage parents to use the computers at the public library, if they do not have the resources at home. We will provide a Howard County Transit Schedule to each family, incase transportation to a library is needed.

  24. Distance Education Program Policies

Policy Development Area: Academic • Analyzing academic policies in our school, county, and state to ensure our program aligns with the curriculum • Making sure the developers are well versed in the curriculum across grade levels • Keeping in mind the county calendar when creating the timeline for the program

  26. Policy Development Area: Labor Management • Enlisting teachers from various grades in the school • Staff Support for meetings and celebrations • Workshop wages will be used to fully address the policy of Labor Management

Faculty Readiness Staff members who participate in the program will take a survey assessing their how experienced and comfortable they are with using Moodle, streaming, podcasts, discussion boards and other online tools. This data will be extremely important as we will plan professional development accordingly.

  28. Faculty Motivation All staff members who participate in our program will be provided workshop wages for their time in addition to food and snacks. They will also be provided with additional planning time during the school day to help develop the courses and modules.

  29. Faculty Support Staff members will need to attend three planning sessions. Planning sessions will occur during the regular school. Coverage will be provided by paraeducators and/or substitutes hired by administration. -Opening Night -Content Area: reading, writing or math -Celebration Night

  30. Faculty Training There will be professional development provided for all teachers involved after school. These sessions will focus specifically on how to use Moodle. There will be three, two hour sessions that will focus on Moodle tools, management and troubleshooting.

  31. Program Assessment • We will focus on three stakeholder groups when assessing the successfulness of the program • Teachers • Parents • Students • Assessment will be ongoing throughout the duration of the program

  32. Parental Assessment of the Program • Begin the program with a needs assessment • Ongoing Assessment- Moodle Discussion Board for Parents • Post Assessment given at the End of the Program Celebration

  33. Teacher Assessment of the Program • Teacher evaluation of the effectiveness of the program • Self and group reflections • Sample teacher evaluation survey

Student Assessment of the Program • Follow a sample of students whose parents are participating in the program • Throughout all grade levels • Number of students will depend on the number of parents participating-ideally 20 students • Observe student performance in the classroom • Student Interviews • Discuss with students how they feel about their success in the classroom as a result of the Parent Power Club

  36. Pilot We will start by piloting Parent Power Club in one school, with the intentions to spread county wide over the next few years. It is important to pilot new programs, so that we can fix any initial problems that may arise. The initial costs of setting up the Moodle account will only have to be paid once for the whole county.
