WARM UP – Jan. 7 New Handout = Page 1 objective copy: I can create questions that relate my prior knowledge of cancer to abnormalities in cell division. do now answer: • Do you know anybody who has had, or currently has, cancer? If so, what type(s)? • Create a formal definition for the disease of cancer, based on your prior knowledge.

Video: Teen Survives Deadly Melanoma • Watch the video without writing anything. • Once the video ends, you will have 2-3 minutes to create 3 scientific questions based on what you just saw. • With groups: • Copy all questions (including yours) into the left side of #2 on the Questioning Form. • Revise all closed-end questions (yes/no answers) to be open-ended questions and write them in the space to the right. • Prioritize all questions.

If not done with the back side of the page, complete it now. If done with it, move to the next step. • Choose one group member to write your group’s highest priority question on the P.1 Driving Question Board.

WARM UP – Jan. 9 objective copy: I can identify the reasons for normal cell division (mitosis), and the specific ways in which cancer cell division is different. do now answer (using p. 3 & data set from yesterday): • If you have not yet finished the ‘Evidence’ portion of your data set, do that now. • With groups, take turns sharing what was on your data set and write the evidence on p. 3 • Once all Evidence is written down, work with groups to create a Claim and Reasoning.

  11. Chromosome Review… KARYOTYPE: A stained image of someone’s chromosomes, seen through a microscope! In your body cells, you have 46 chromosomes, which is really 23pairs. You have two of every chromosome… Can you guess why you have TWO copies of each?

How to get microscope in focus • Put your lens on low power (red lens) • Use coarse and fine adjustments to get colored cell cluster in view • Move to medium power • Use coarse/fine adjustment to get cell cluster in view • Move to high power • Use coarse/fine adjustment to get cell cluster in view

  38. Once in high power… • Try to find a SINGLE cell in interphase (DNA will not be very clear- it will be lightly stained, as opposed to some dark stains you see in other cells) • Line up that cell along the black pointer in your eyepiece so your partner can see it • In the box provided, sketch what that cell looks like • Do the same for the mitotic stages- these chromosomes will have a dark stain. Look for a pattern!
