  1. NHAI to Rebuild Three Major Bridges in Mangaluru The Karnataka Coastline is one of the most important geographical parts of India, with the Western Ghats on its east and the Arabian Sea on its west. The coastline houses many rivers and their corresponding bridges for the free flow of traffic. However, in due course of time, some of these bridges have undergone severe weathering. In recent news, the bridge across the River Phalguni in Bantwal Taluk collapsed on June 25, 2018. The bridge, which belongs to the state PWD, had been subjected to severe wear and tear due to excessive sand mining in the area. This incident impelled the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to investigate the condition of all possible bridges along the Karnataka Coastline. NHAI has employed R.V Associates, an engineering consultant, to conduct surveys and inspections of the infrastructure of the bridges throughout the coastline. The inspection includes all the major and minor bridges belonging to the NHAI network. After proper analysis, it has been suggested to reconstruct one major, two minor, and two extra-long bridges that fall along NH 66. After the detailed survey, NHAI has proposed to rebuild three major bridges: The Kumta Bridge, the Sharavathi Bridge and the Phalguni Bridge. Coming along the coastline, these bridges need immediate reconstruction. On scrutinizing, the consultant found drastic amounts of cracking, spalling, exposed reinforcement and major cuts in various parts of the Sharavathi Bridge. The bridge, which is 1047.65 metres long, was constructed more than 3 decades ago and has suffered major overhaul over the decades, thus rendering it unfit for current Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards. The same has also been noted about the Kumta Bridge, which runs across the Aghanashini River in Uttara Kanadda, and the Phalguni Bridge, both of which have markedly deteriorated conditions. With NHAI taking up the bridge reconstruction project, the Karnataka Coastline will soon see some developments coming up in the near future. #NHAI #KumtaBridge #Mangaluru #SharavathiBridge #PhalguniBridge #Reconstruction
