Ms. Tran’s 1st Grade News Sept. 12, 2013 Room 2 News ELA News Math News The students visited the school garden for the first time last Friday. It was an amazing learning experience, and you can check out pictures from that trip on the class website: http://teacherweb.com/CA/Booksin/MsTran/apt1.aspx Today, the students had their first science lesson with the science teacher, Mrs. Moultray. Tomorrow, two lovely parents will come teach a Project Cornerstone lesson with the class about friendship. In math this week, we will be focusing on the base ten number system. We will learn that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. We will begin comparing two two-digit numbers (10-20) based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, and record our results of those comparisons using the symbols >, <, and =. The sentence frames the children will be using this week will be:  "The number  ___ is composed of ____  tens and  ___  ones" and "The number  ____  is greater/less than the number ____ because____." It is important in first grade that the children learn how to give an explanation of why and how they came to that answer. Please try and work on this at home with your child!! This week, we’re wrapping up the unit on story elements. The students learned about the characters, setting, sequencing, problems, and solutions of wonderful stories such as Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon, Rocket Writes a Story, and The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. We also reviewed the vowels Aa, Ii, and Oo. Next week, the focus will be on the letter Ee and the high frequency words my and do. Students will also learn to make connections between characters from different books and stories using thinking maps.
