  4. Christopher Columbus 1451-1506 Columbus sailed across the ocean in 1492 from Spain to discover America. He sailed on the 3 ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. He is credited with calling the Native Americans “Indians” because he thought he had landed in the East Indies to buy spices.

  6. Pocahontas 1595-1617 Pocahontas was the young Native American Princess who helped the Jamestown settlers survive their 1st winter in America. She brought them corn, meat, and furs.

  8. Benjamin Franklin 1706-1790 Ben Franklin discovered electricity in lightening when he flew a kite with a key on a string in a thunder storm. He invented many things including the Franklin stove, bifocals, and the lightening rod. He was a printer and statesmen, too. He signed the Declaration of Independence declaring the 13 colonies free from English rule. Also, he started the first public library and volunteer fire department in Philadelphia.

  12. Betsy Ross 1751-1836 Betsy Ross is said to have sewn the first flag for the United States of America. It had 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the 13 colonies that united to become the USA.

  14. Abraham Lincoln 1809-1882 Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. His nickname was “Honest Abe”. He freed the slaves which started the Civil War between the northern and southern states of the USA.

  16. George Washington Carver 1864-1943 George Washington Carver was a scientist who studied plants. His nickname was the “Plant Doctor.” He created over 300 things to do with peanuts.
