  4. Those who seem unteachable • (Prov 17:16 NKJV) Why is there in the hand of a fool the purchase price of wisdom, Since he has no heart for it? • (Prov 17:16 TLB) It is senseless to pay tuition to educate a rebelwho has no heart for truth.

  5. A true friend will stand by you. • (Prov 17:17 NKJV) A friend loves at all times,And a brother is born for adversity. • (Prov 17:17 TLB) A true friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.

  6. Be careful what you promise • (Prov 17:18 NKJV) A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in a pledge, And becomes surety for his friend. • (Prov 17:18 TLB) It is poor judgment to countersign another's note, to become responsible for his debts.

  7. Bad Attitudes get us in trouble. • (Prov 17:19 NKJV) He who loves transgression loves strife, And he who exalts his gate seeks destruction. • (Prov 17:19 TLB) Sinners love to fight; boasting is looking for trouble. (Prov 17:19 NIV) He who loves a quarrel loves sin;he who builds a high gate invites destruction.

  8. He that exalteth his gate Pro 17:19 • - In different parts of Palestine they are obliged to have the doors of their courts and houses very low, not more than three feet high, to prevent the Arabs, who scarcely ever leave the backs of their horses, from riding into the courts and houses, and spoiling their goods. He, then, who, through pride and ostentation, made a high gate, exposed himself to destruction;

  9. He that exalteth his gate • and is said here to seek it, because he must know that this would be a necessary consequence of exalting his gate. But although the above is a fact, yet possibly gate is here taken for the mouth; and the exalting of the gate may mean proud boasting and arrogant speaking, such as has a tendency to kindle and maintain strife. And this interpretation seems to agree better with the scope of the context than the above. – Adam Clarke

  10. Definition of “Gate” • H6607 • פּתח • pethach • BDB Definition: • 1) opening, doorway, entrance

  11. Bad Attitudes get us in trouble. • (Prov 17:20 NKJV) He who has a deceitful heart finds no good, And he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil. • (Prov 17:20 TLB) An evil man is suspicious of everyone and tumbles into constant trouble.

  12. Rebellious Children bring grief • (Prov 17:21 NKJV) He who begets a scoffer does so to his sorrow, And the father of a fool has no joy. • (Prov 17:21 TLB) It's no fun to be a rebel's father. • (Prov 17:21 NIV) To have a fool for a son brings grief; there is no joy for the father of a fool.

  13. A good spirit makes us feel better • (Prov 17:22 NKJV) A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones. • (Prov 17:22 NCV) A happy heart is like good medicine, but a broken spirit drains your strength.

  14. Perverting Justice • (Prov 17:23 NKJV) A wicked man accepts a bribe behind the backTo pervert the ways of justice. • (Prov 17:23 TLB) It is wrong to accept a bribeto twist justice.

  15. The fool does not seek wisdom • (Prov 17:24 NKJV) Wisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth. • (Prov 17:24 NCV) The person with understanding is always looking for wisdom, but the mind of a fool wanders everywhere.

  16. Rebellious children bring heartache • (Prov 17:25 NKJV) A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her who bore him. • (Prov 17:25 NCV) A foolish son makes his father sad and causes his mother great sorrow.

  17. Treat others rightly • (Prov 17:26 NKJV) Also, to punish the righteous is not good, Nor to strike princes for their uprightness. • (Prov 17:26 TLB) How shortsighted to fine the godly for being good! And to punish nobles for being honest!

  18. Adam Clarke on Pro 17:26 • Nor to strike princes for equity - To fall out with the ruler of the people, and to take off his head under pretense of his not being a just or equitable governor, is unjust. To kill a king on the ground of justice is a most dreadful omen to any land. Where was it ever done, that it promoted the public prosperity? No experiment of this kind has ever yet succeeded, howsoever worthless the king might be. (This concerned a righteous person.)

  19. Jehoiada orders a queen killed. • (2 Chr 23:13-14 NKJV) When she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance; and the leaders and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, also the singers with musical instruments, and those who led in praise. So Athaliah tore her clothes and said, "Treason! Treason!”

  20. Jehoiada orders a queen killed. • (2 Chr 23:13-14 NKJV) {14} And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, "Take her outside under guard, and slay with the sword whoever follows her." For the priest had said, "Do not kill her in the house of the LORD."

  21. Choose Your Words Carefully • (Prov 17:27 NKJV) He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. • (Prov 17:27 TLB) The man of few words and settled mind is wise; therefore, even a fool is thought to be wise when he is silent. It pays him to keep his mouth shut.

  22. Choose Your Words Carefully • (Prov 17:28 NKJV) Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive. • (Prov 17:28 NCV) Even fools seem to be wise if they keep quiet; if they don't speak, they appear to understand.

  23. The Power of the Tongue • (James 3:8-10 NKJV) But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. {9} With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. {10} Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
