  2. TOPICS • Livelihoods of the early Filipinos • Technology used by the early Filipinos

  3. LIVELIHOODS • The livelihoods of the early Filipinos included: farming, fishing, pearl diving, pottery, hunting,collecting fire wood, mining, fruit picking and trading.

  4. FARMING Farming is one of the main industries of the early Filipinos • The early Filipinos three methods of farming. • There is the kaingin, araro or plow and the irrigation method

  5. KAINGIN METHOD In kaingin,the farmer would clear or remove all wild plants on the land.They would burn the plants and the farmers would then dig holes on the ground .Then, seed or stems would be planted in it.

  6. ARARO OR PLOW METHOD In araro or plow, big piles of soil would be broken into smaller pieces by using suyod or a horrow.The plow and the horrow would be pulled by a carabao, while the farmer was behind the plow.

  7. IRRIGATION METHOD • In the irrigation mehtod, they would dig tunnels r canals on cliffs where there is a stream or a river that flows to the area where the farmer is planting crops.Through irrigation farmers could harvest more for the year.

  8. HUNTING One of the most common livelihood of the early Filipinos The early Filipinos used spears, bows and arrows. They hunted for baboy-ramo or wild pigs and other wild animals.

  9. FISHING • The early Filipinos used spears and fishing nets called lambats to catch fish.They catch fish, shrimp and other crustaceans like crabs and lobsters.They only use large nets with big holes so that they won’t catch the smaller fish.

  10. Sometimes they would pour plant extracts into the body of water to make the fish dizzy, then the fish can easily be caught by net or spear. The early Filipinos also used traps like Paksol and Salakab.

  11. Paksol was built at the edge of the lake.It was covered with water plants and water flowed into it.When a big fish goes in he trap, it could seldom get out.

  12. Salakab was a basket-like thing made of thin bamboo sticks with and open bottom. The fishermen would throw it into the water as many times until they would catch a fish.

  13. PEARL DIVING • Another livelihood of the early Filipinos is pearl diving. It is a popular livelihood in Mindanao.In pearl diving, they dive and look for oysters and remove them from the rocks wih a knife.Then, they open it up and see if there are pearls.

  14. MINING The early Filipinos mined for gold, silver, copper and steel. They used steel to make blades fos bolos, spears, daggers, arrows, plows and horrows.

  15. FRUIT PICKING The early Filipinos would pick fruits in the forest. They would climb and cut the stem or branch with fruits with a bolo or a dagger.

  16. POTERRY The early Filipinos would make pots or jars.They would use clay to make earthen pots and jars.

  17. TRADING The early Filipinos later on traded with merchants their products for the merchant’s products. This system of trade is called barter.They traded with merchants from Cambodia, Siam, China, Borneo and Japan.

  18. TECHNOLOGY USED BY THE EARLY FILIPINOS The early Filipinos used different tools. Their tools were made up of materials like steel, wood and stone.

  19. TOOLS USED FOR HUNTING AND FISHING The early filipinos used spears to catch fish and animals. They also used bows and arrows.The tips of the spear and arrow are usualy made up of stone or steel.

  20. While the rest of the spear or arrow is made up of wood. The bows would be made up of wood. They used stones to sharpen their weapons.

  21. WEAPONS USED IN WAR The early Filipinos used different weapons in war. They used bolos, spears, bows and arrows in battle.

  22. TOOLS USED IN FARMING The tools they used in farming were plows and horrows . They were made of steel or stone.
