  6. Charge for the Intensity Frontier workshop in April 2013: Develop a coherent and interconnected view of the Intensity Frontier that will be presented at Snowmass. Describe future facilities and experiments at the Intensity Frontier and their capabilities.  Document the contributions of the Intensity Frontier towards addressing the major questions in particle physics and explain how and why it is complementary to the other frontiers, which together constitute experimental particle physics. History Opportunities for input and feedback from the community: • August 2011: Intensity Frontier working groups formed • Nov 30-Dec 2, 2011: Intensity Frontier workshop, Rockville • 500+ participants across all of the IF • May 2012: Intensity Frontier report, arXiv:1205.2671 • Oct 11-13, 2012: Community Planning Meeting, FNAL • April 25-27, 2013: Intensity Frontier workshop, ANL • > 300 registered • July 29 – Aug 6, 2013: Snowmass on the Mississippi, Minneapolis Plus subgroup meetings Need to ask: Impact of this ? Deliverables from Snowmass: Time line Draft by July 1 Each subgroup in each frontier will produce 30-50 page subgroup write-up Draft by start of Snowmass Each subgroup in each frontier will also produce a 5-6 page subgroup summary Draft by start of Snowmass Each frontier will combine subgroup summaries into ~30 page frontier write-up Draft by end of Snowmass Each frontier will also produce a 5-6 page frontier summary – base for final summary The “Snowmass book” will consist of: Draft by end of Snowmass + few days The 7 frontier summaries ( ~7x30 pages) Overall summary ( based on frontier summaries) Present at DPF2013 Discussion during workshop Intensity Frontier mtg; April 25-27 2013, H.Weerts

  11. The Snowmass Intensity Frontier and LBNE. Snowmass should not be dominated/overshadowed by LBNE discussion: “Yes, no, maybe” Need to recognize “special” role of LBNE in US HEP program To face this concern: Some observations about LBNE: Very visible Long baseline neutrino physics central part of HEP program Central part of US Intensity Frontier & Fermilab program Gets field excited in both directions ( + & -) Has gone thru some ups & downs • Has CD-1 • There is a plan • Has a budget • Has passed some project scrutiny  has reality • Only BIG HEP project “on the books” currently and going into Snowmass • Phase-I (=LBNE10) “only” currently approved • Long time line for physics • Other experiments will have results • Parts of community continues to question Intensity Frontier mtg; April 25-27 2013, H.Weerts

LBNE configuration for Snowmass science opportunities LBNE defined • 700kW beam; 1300km distance • No near detector • 10kT LAr TPC above ground LBNE10 or Phase I will happen CD approval allows scope changes on US side • 700kW beam; 1300km distance • With near detector • 10kT (or more) LAr TPC underground Goal: LBNE Phase I plus partners Document physics reach LBNE Ultimate goal (Phase II): • > 2.3MW beam; 1300km distance • With near detector • > 34kT LAr TPC underground Document physics reach of these phases ( mass scenarios, beam power incl. Project X and with/without near detector) Recognize time line and other physics results Snowmass: Intensity Frontier mtg; April 25-27 2013, H.Weerts

Non LBNE activities at Snowmass Given complex status of LBNE and community “anxiety”: • Need to have discussion and presentation of other ideas, experiments in neutrino field for next 10 years ( although Snowmass exercise is goes beyond that) • Need to have this airing of ideas and exchange of opinions; it is community input • Given structure of Snowmass--- needs to happen mostly before Snowmass • These exchanges will in principle strengthen the LBNE case • There is no good reason not to have these discussions Frank and open discussions/exchange of ideas are needed on these topics. It needs to be done in a constructive way, leading to a more coherent, better program and not result in more internal stress. Intensity Frontier mtg; April 25-27 2013, H.Weerts

This was supposed to be: Some food for thought for workshop Help of us off to a good start Ground rules we should try and follow: Respect for others, their work and ideas is the magic word that we need for this workshop and for Snowmass. After all we all want the same thing…….. understand nature Frank and open discussions/exchange of ideas are needed, but it needs be done in a constructive way. Do it in a way that brings coherence to the program and not result in more internal stress. Let’s start Intensity Frontier mtg; April 25-27 2013, H.Weerts
