  2. Where, how to start? Can I even accomplish this?

  3. Questions to answer: Do I know enough after the semester to do this? Where is the data going to come from? Do I have enough time to complete the project? I barely completed some exercises- what makes me think I can do this more complex project? Why so many questions? Are there answers?

  4. Problem Number One: Little and/or no idea what to do my project on. Without an idea, it’s hard to proceed far. Set myself up with anything to start. How about the classic outline? It was a place to begin.

  5. For certain, I wanted to reduce this… (Comp_44033) …to this size Reduced to roughly1/9th original size. Faster processing/drawing within ArcMap. (Comp_44033_Clip)

  6. Comp_44033 = 754.28 MB Comp_44033_Clip = 3.98 MB Over 750 MB ArcMap doesn’t have to draw each time. Each satellite image can be broken into “workable” units; in this case, I didn’t need a large portion of the image for my project At this point, I had figured out what to script!

  7. Original in Model Builder Getting a visual on what I wanted to do ended up being crucial. Final version

  8. Knowing the order/listings of the inputs was also important. Made it a whole lot easier to figure out how to write it out correctly the first or second time around. Having a solid knowledge of ArcGIS also helped a lot- this would be extra-complex without it!

  9. Conclusions: 1. I wouldn’t have been able to complete the project without lots of research and extra time at the computer (ESRIs “Python for Everyone for ArcGIS 10.1” is highly reccommended). 2. Learning a computer code of any kind is hard work. 3. I’m really glad “the light came on” about ¾ of the way through the semester! 4. Once understood, I could see how powerful a tool Python can be with ArcGIS. Being able to automate tasks can be of enormous use in a GIS setting.
