    3. History & Background Established 1958 Located on the Blessing Plantation - just North of Charleston, SC Severe deterioration zone per AWPA Standard C4 Survived Hurricane Hugo in 1989!

    4. History & Background Cooperative test between 4 creosote suppliers: Allied Chemical US Steel Koppers Industries Bernuth Lembcke Co.

    5. History & Background 7 ft. Southern yellow pine posts 11 types of creosote / creosote blends installed Retention targets of 4, 6 & 8 pcf.

    6. Creosote Types Creosotes designated A, C, D, F and G were straight run distillates. Creosotes designated B and E contained 2% pentachlorophenol. Creosotes designated H and I were 70/30 solutions meeting the 1958 P2 Standard (not available). Creosotes solutions J and K were 50/50 solutions meeting the 1958 P3 Standard.

    7. Selected Attributes of Creosotes Creosote types A & D had the lowest residue at 355şF, with A being the most volatile. Type G is the closest to the blend of P1/P13 used today. Type F meets the current P2 Standard.

    8. Visual Grading Scale 10 indicated a sound post 9 rating allowed surface softness up to 1/8” deep 7 rating indicated general surface decay, up to 1/4” deep. 4 rating indicated decay exceeding 1/2”, and 0 rating indicated failure - post easily broken.

Conclusions This test represents the longest continuous evaluation of creosote treated posts 2 creosote blends, G & F, are exhibiting excellent performance and most closely represent current P1/P13 and P2 Standard products. Creosote has been demonstrated to provide outstanding long term protection in harsh, ground contact applications
