How Medicines Help You • Drug- A substance that changes the way the body or mind works. • Medicine- A drug used to prevent or cure illness or disease or relieve pain. • Prescription Drug- Medicine that can only be obtained with a written order form from a physician. • OTC Drug- Medicine purchased without a prescription (over the counter).

  3. Ways Drugs are used as Medicine • Cure illness or disease (vaccines) • Treat symptoms (pain, runny nose) • Treat conditions that last a long time (high blood pressure)

  4. How Drugs Enter the body • Swallowed – pills, cough medicine. • Injected- into a vein or muscle using a needle. • Inhaled- through the nose or mouth (asthma inhaler) • Absorbed – through the skin (ointments, drops or sprays)

  5. How Drugs Affect the Body • Dose- the amount of a drug taken at one time. • 1. Affected by: • a. Amount- larger the dose, the stronger • the effect. • b. Person’s age- a drug may effect a very • young or very old person differently. • c. Body weight- greater the body weight, • the greater dose is needed.

  6. d. Health of a person- a drug can affect someone differently who is in poor health. e. State of mind- a person’s mood can affect a drug’s performance. f. Presence of other drugs- in the body can increase or decrease their effect. g. Side Effects- a drug may respond differently from one person to the next.

  7. How drugs affect the body • Side Effect- an unwanted reaction to a drug. • Tolerance- condition in which increasing amounts of a drug are needed to produce the desired effect. (built up immunity)

  8. Drug Safety • A Pharmacist is a licensed professional who distributes drugs. • Safe OTC Drug use include: • Take only with parents supervision. • Read the label! Follow all instructions. • Use only for its stated purpose. • Do not buy if the seal is broken. • Check the expiration date. • Keep OTC’s in their original containers.

  9. Misuse and Drug Abuse • What is the difference between misuse and abuse? • Misuse- unintentional • Abuse- done on purpose • Physical Dependence- repeated use that causes tolerance. • Psychological Dependence- repeated use for social reasons.

  10. Signs of Drug Use • Lying about using • “I only tried it once” • Hiding or smelling like drugs • Having friends that use
