Welcome! • Welcome to ESAC! • Centre of science operations and data archiving
Introductions • ESA Support Team: • Dave Heather (Science Archives Coordinator) • Olivier Witasse (MEX Project Scientist) • Hakan Svedhem (VEX Project Scientist) • Alejandro Cardesin, Nicolas Manaud (Mars Express support) • Maud Barthelemy, Miguel Perez (Venus Express support) • Jose Luis Vazquez (PSA support) • Carlos Rios (SAT support) • Asun Casado / Patrick Martin (Local organisation) • Instrument Team support! • SPICAV-SOIR science team • PFS science team
Why a Joint Mars / Venus Express data workshop? • Mars Express in orbit since December 2003 • Venus Express in orbit since April 2006 • The scientific community active in Venus research is small compared to that of other planets but is growing fast as more data from Venus Express becomes available. • The ESA Planetary Science Archive contains more and more data from all missions • This w/s is the first for Venus Express and will address the data from the SOIR instrument. • Similar workshops dealing with data from the other instruments will follow later this year and next year
Workshop objectives • Goals: • To inform how to access the data • To explain how to use, process, and analyse the data • To create some links between experiment teams and users • First step for using the data in your own research • To increase the scientific output of the missions!
Attention The data available in the archive are free to use… BUT • It is strongly recommended to contact the experiment team in case of presentations and/or publications • Acknowledge the archive (PSA) • Cite the data set! • Mention “Venus Express” or “Mars Express” in titles and abstracts!

Venus Express Science Objectives • The overall aim of the mission is to carry out a comprehensive study of the atmosphere of Venus and to study in some detail the plasma environment and a number of aspects of the surface of the planet.
VEX Science Themes • Atmospheric Dynamics • Global Dynamics mechanisms, Super-rotation, Double Polar Vortex • Atmospheric Structure • Density and Temperature in three dimensions • Atmospheric Composition and Chemistry • Processes and species in the different regions • Cloud Layer and Hazes • Behaviour and characteristics, UV absorber • Radiative Balance and Greenhouse effect • Global thermal balance, Greenhouse in past, present and future • Surface Properties and Geology • Volcanic and seismic activity, highly radar reflective areas • Plasma Environment and Escape processes • Evolution of the atmosphere, water, escape history
SPICAV-SOIR • Overview of the experiment • Available data in the archive • Explanations on how to derive higher-level data • Examples of higher-level data usage • Use of software
Mars Express Science Objectives • The mission's main objective is to search for sub-surface water from orbit and utilise a series of remote sensing experiments to shed new light on the Martian atmosphere, the planet's structure, geology and composition.
MEX Science Themes • Global high-resolution photogeology • Super-resolution photogeology of selected areas of the planet • Global high spatial resolution mineralogical mapping of the Martian surface • Global atmospheric circulation characterisation, and high-resolution mapping of the atmospheric composition • Subsurface structure characterisation down to the permafrost • Surface-atmosphere interaction; interaction of the atmosphere with the interplanetary medium • Structure of the interior, atmosphere and environment via radio science measurements • Surface geochemistry and exobiology
PFS Workshop • Overview of the experiment • Available data in the archive • Explanations on how to derive higher-level data • Examples of higher-level data production • Use of software • Use of visualisation software
