  2. Purpose • To examine diction • To recognize the importance of precise diction

  3. Visualization • Close your eyes and visualize the word I’m going to say. • Don’t say a word, quickly sketch and write a description of the clock you imagined. • Volunteers to read your descriptions? • What do you notice from these different descriptions?

  4. The Giver • Read along with me as I read to page 4.

  5. The Giver • In chapter 1, much importance is given to using the precise word. Jonas is careful about which word he would use to describe his feelings about the ceremony in which he will participate during December. • List the words Jonas considers but finally rejects.

  6. The Giver • What word does Jonas finally select and what does it mean? • Jonas’s friend Asher is not as careful in his diction. In chapter 1, Asher uses the word ________________, which means ________________, when he really means ________________, which means ________________.
