Making sentences negative is easy by just placing a “no” before the verb = not do something / don’t • Ex: El nada. = he swims • Ex: El no nada. = he doesn’t swim • Three other words to make a sent. negative are: • Nunca = never ex: Nunca estudio. • Nada = nothing ex: No hago nada los lunes. • Nadie = no one ex: Nadie toca el piano.

Grammar Rules for negative words: • Nunca/nada: place the neg. word before the verb or use a double negative and put “no” before the verb and “nunca or nada” after the verb (end of sent.) • *Nunca can go either before or after verb but nada must be used with a double negative “no…verb…nada” • Ex: Nunca estudio para el examen. –or- • Ex: No estudio para el examen nunca. • Ex: Mi madre no cocina nada para la cena hoy.

  4. Grammar Rules for negative words: • Nadie – a) used like nunca and can go before the verb or used as a double negative with “no” before the verb and nadie after the verb. b.) it is used with the singular (el/ella) form of the verb • Ex: Nadie escucha en clase. • Ex: No escucha en clase nadie.

  5. Questions with using negatives to answer how often, how much, and who: Ex: Con que’ frecuencia estudias? (nunca) Nunca estudio. / No estudio nunca. Ex: Que haces los fines de semana? (nada) No hago nada los fines de semana. Ex: Quien canta en el coro? (nadie) Nadie canta en el coro. / No canta en el coro nadie.

  6. Practice: create six negative sentences using the expressions given. Conjugate verbs. • Yo / nunca / sacar la basura • Juan / preparar / nada / para la tarea • Nadie / jugar / al baloncesto • Los estudiantes / nunca / ir a la biblioteca • Tu / pintar / nada / en la clase de arte • Nadie / tocar / el piano
