Latest developments • EC-MS meeting on 21 September: • Draft Q&A • Paper clarifying meaning of “use by” – “best before” (food waste) • Next meeting: November and December 2012 • FDE-EuroCommerce joint guidance: • Comments on responsibility accepted, pre-packed for direct sale excluded from document • Awaiting for feedback on discussions 21 September for modification of guidance • Communication to be discussed after completion of first draft

Latest developments • Voluntary provision of energy content in KCal only: • Actions carried out: • Suggested and supported EP amendments on providing KCals but rules based on an international agreement • Note for national authorities on potential implications of requiring both kJ and kCal and requesting pragmatic approach • Raised issue at Nutrition Platform • Meeting DG ENTR to explore changes to EU legislation on units of measurement • Companies must provide all energy information in both kJ and kCal

Future work: origin labelling • Implementing acts on mandatory origin labellingof: • swine, sheep, goat and poultry meats - DG AGRI, December 2013 • ingredients that do not originate from place of last substantial change (voluntary origin indication) - DG SANCO, December 2013 • Reports on the mandatory indication of origin for (a) meat used as an ingredient – DG SANCO, 13 December 2013

Swine, sheep, goat and poultry meats • Study to examine different options of implementing origin labelling for fresh meat (including minced meat): • It will cover the EU-27 • 6 case studies: pig (2 cases), poultry (2 cases) and lamb and goat (2 cases) supply chains • Consumers views through existing consumer surveys • List of options to be drawn: • Reference to country / area (EU – non EU) / region within a country • Information to be given: born / rear / slaughter / farming • .

Swine, sheep, goat and poultry meats • Next steps: • 26 October workshop - stakeholder views on different options for origin labelling on pig, poultry and sheep and goat meat • general session • 2 sessions: pig and poultry meat and sheep and goat meat • FPC to appoint 2 representatives and to provide DG AGRI with feedback before meeting - DG AGRI to conduct an impact assessment of the options identified in March 2013
