  1. Listening Level 1 I understand instructions, questions and short phrases with the help of repetition, mime or pictures. Level 2 I understand a range of familiar phrases, sentences and instructions with some repetition and respond using words and actions. Level 3 I can note the main points and details from a short spokenpassage made up of familiar language.

  2. Level 4 I understand the main points and can pick out some of the detail from longer passages made up of familiar language from one topic. Level 5 I understand the main points and opinions in passages made up of language from several topics. I understand when present and past or future events are described. Level 6 I understand language in new situations. I understand when present and past and future events are described.

  3. Speaking Level 1 I use single words or short phrases. I can copy correct pronunciation. Level 2 I answer simple questions. I can produce short answers and use set phrases. Level 3 I can ask simple questions and talk about my interests using short phrases. I can use the vocabulary I have learned to vary my answers.

  4. Level 4 I can take part in a conversation with prompts and use grammar to adapt. I can give my opinions and my pronunciation is generally accurate. Level 5 I can take part in a conversation using present and past or future tense. I can give opinions and ask for information and reasons. Sometimes I vary and expand my answers to give extra detail. Level 6 I can give my opinion and answer simple questions about it. I can use the present and past and future tense. I can use grammar to build my own phrases in new contexts.

  5. Reading Level 1 I understand clearly written single words and phrases. Level 2 I can understand short phrases that I have seen before. I can read aloud familiar words and phrases. I can look up words. Level 3 I can understand short texts and note main points. I am learning to use a bi-lingual dictionary or glossary to look up words.

  6. Level 4 I can understand shorttexts, work out meanings and note main points and details. I try to use context to work out the meaning of unfamiliar words. Level 5 I can understand on my own a variety of texts with present and past or future events in them. I can use reference materials with confidence. Level 6 I can understand the present and past and future tenses. I can use context and my knowledge of grammar to work out the meaning of unfamiliar language.

  7. Writing Level 1 I can copy single words correctly. I can label pictures and choose the right word to fill in gaps. Level 2 I can write short phrases correctly using examples. I can spell some words from memory. Level 3 I can write a few sentenceswith support. I can express likes/dislikes. I can write short phrases from memory.

  8. Level 4 I can write a paragraph based on familiar topics. I can use grammar to change words or phrases. Sometimes I use a bi-lingual dictionary or glossary to check words or phrases. Level 5 I can write a short text. I can refer to past or future events as well as things I do every day. I can convey meaning clearly. Level 6 I can write a short text including questions and opinions. I can refer to the present, past and future. I can apply my knowledge of grammar in a new context to make up sentences.
