Frame the issue examined • Why does one country have X lower than another? • Why did one Republican President achieve reelection – but two others failed? • Is Alabama really an “emerging” state rather than a traditional one? • Why did the South realign between D & R? • Did “consociational democracy” bring peace in Northern Ireland – or did it lock in conflict ?

  3. This project will explore… • Three Presidents of the same party? • Two generations? • Four rich countries in the OECD? • One war and three theories of why it started? • Five states in the period 1928-2008? • Whether US troops should pull out of the Korengal valley?

  4. Literature survey • These authors argue one way: • Alpha (1789) • Bravo (1812) • Charlie (1923) • These authors argue the other way: • Delta (1989) • Echo (1996) • This author approaches it with opinion polls: • Foxtrot (2003)

  6. My section of material (2) • To add a table /chart /image, press Control-M to insert a new slide, then paste in chart and stretch corners to match space available • In low resolution display projector, full slide images look better and more readable

  8. My section of material (4)

  9. Findings • One President got reelected, unlike the others, because he ran on national security • Southern whites realigned because of X, not because of Y • The policies of 2 Republican Presidents /Congresses were actually more liberal than 2 Democrats • Among 6 countries, Presidents actually have less power in practice than Prime Ministers

  10. Major sources (only) • Alpha. 1789. The Quest for Human Knowledge. • Bravo. 1812. Desperate to Learn. • Charlie. 1923.Thirsty to Understand. • Delta. 1989. Wrong on the Facts. • Echo. 1996.
