  11. How will RtA affect my child? Your child will be assessed in reading at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. These formative assessments give valuable information to teachers so that appropriate instruction can be delivered to students. You will receive written notification and a Home Connect letter three times a year providing information about your child’s reading assessments and suggestions for what to do at home. Starting in January all 3rd graders will begin working on a reading portfolio. To complete the portfolio requirement students must have 3 proficient passages per 12 standards.

  12. How will RtA affect my child? Continued… All students will take the EOG If students do not pass the EOG – there are 2 options. Completed Portfolio Retake EOG or RtA test If students are still not proficient they are enrolled in summer camp. If parents do not send child to camp – automatically retained in third grade While at camp the student can work towards completion of reading portfolio or RtA test If still not proficient the student moves to next school year with a “retained” label and served in either a 3/4 transitional class or an accelerated class. Students will be given another chance on Nov. 1 to retake the RtA test. If pass – loose label. If not students stays in same class, takes the 4th grade EOG and principal decides if the child moves on to fifth grade.

  13. What is NES doing to address the needs of my child? Using formative assessments to gain information on students strengths and weaknesses in reading. Using that information to drive instruction Monitor frequently student progress through mClass. RTI – Responsiveness to Instruction All students are Tier I Students requiring additional support are Tier II or III Research based/quality teaching in every 2nd grade class. Extra reading support provided by reading specialists outside of the regular classroom using research based programs. Open communication

  15. NES students will not have a PEP (personalized education plan). Our students will have either a Tier I, Tier II, or Tier III RTI plan to address their learning needs.

  16. What can parents do? Find 20 minutes each day for reading Read books your child enjoys Talk with your child about reading Encourage your child read Read every day during breaks from school Request periodic teacher conferences to monitor your child’s progress After this presentation please sign up for a conference with your child’s teacher and/or reading specialist to monitor your child’s progress.
