  2. Our Question……… For each student, how much paper, electricity, water and fossil fuel does the college consume? How does this translate into carbon dioxide emitted per student?

  3. What We Researched • Paper Usage • Electricity Usage • Water Usage • Gasoline and Diesel Usage • Natural Gas Usage • Average of these usages per student • Amount of carbon given off, per student

  5. Problems With Information • Time Table • Water and Sewage Consumption Amounts • Carbon Conversion Ratios

  6. Overcoming the Problems • Kept contacting Mr. Miller • Unable to obtain consumption amounts for water and sewage • Contacted Dr. East for carbon ratios

  8. Carbon Conversion • For Every KWH of electricity, .5 lbs or .2 kg of carbon is given off into the atmosphere • For every gallon of petrol burned, 5 lbs or 2.27 kg of carbon is given off

  9. Everyday Examples • Average home air conditioner gives off 1800 lbs of carbon per year • Average household toaster gives off 20 lbs of carbon per year

  10. W&J’s Carbon Emissions • 4,263 total gallons of petrol at 5 lbs of carbon per gallon equals 21,315 lbs of carbon in 2002 • 12,300,000 KWH at .5 lbs per KWH equals 6,150,000 lbs of carbon given off in 2002 by electric consumption • Total Carbon emissions for 2002 was 6,171,315 lbs

  11. Carbon Dioxide Conversion • Each pound of Carbon bonds with Oxygen to form four pounds of Carbon Dioxide • Petrol emitted 85,260 lbs of Carbon Dioxide last year • Electricity emitted 24,600,000 lbs of Carbon Dioxide in 2002

  12. How the School Could Change • Green Mountain Energy Company • More efficient use of heat and electricity • Upgrading grounds vehicles to more fuel efficient ones • Flow restricting valves for water

  13. What the school is currently implementing • Upgrading Grounds Equipment • More efficient systems in the new buildings • Monitoring existing utility systems
