  • Cleared up trade problems still lingering after the Revolutionary War

  • Gave America “most favored nation” statues with Great Britain


Pinckney s treaty
Pinckney’s Treaty

  • 1795

  • Established intentions of friendship between the U.S. and Spain

  • Gave U.S. right to navigate the Mississippi and deposit goods at the port of New Orleans

  • French seized American ships

  • Sent diplomats (known as X, Y, and Z) to bribe the U.S. in 1797

  • Adams wanted to avoid war

  • Brief skirmish happened in 1798, became known as the Quasi-War

  • Ended the Quasi-War that had been going on since 1797

  • Reaction to attacks and impressments of seamen

  • Placed a ban on trade with European countries
