  7. MISSION: • The program is designed to assist students who do not have access to technology at home.

  8. INITIATIVE: • Students will receive refurbished laptops in exchange for good grades.

  9. PROGRAM DESIGN

  10. CORE VALUES: • Impact young people and empower parents by creating a working relationship with the student’s high school counselor.

  11. VISION: • Enhance educational opportunities and increase the accessibility of technology at HOME to low-income members of our community.

  12. OBJECTIVES: • Computer Competency for students. • Improve Keyboarding Skills. • GPA increase of 0.3% (example 2.0 GPA to 2.3 or higher).

  13. KEY ASSUMPATIONS: • Parents (+) Students teaming up to achieve a common goal. • Parents (+) Students (+) Counselors will create a healthy communication pathway toward graduation for students. • Educational Intervention for at risk students. • Students desire ownership of a laptop at home.

  14. IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS: • Parents (+) Students (+) Counselors = Personal Laptop initiative model is designed to assist the communication between parents and counselors.

  15. QUALIFICATIONS: • High School Student • Low-income • At risk students

  16. STEP BY STEP: • Counselor gives packet to student.

  17. STEP 2: • Student takes packet home to parent.

  18. STEP 3: • Parent fills out application. 1. Phone. or 2. Website.

  19. What we need: • Recipient Information for Citizenship Licenses • You need to supply the following information for recipients of citizenship licenses: •  Recipient Name/Fee of $35 •  City •  State •  Country •  Name of Charitable Organization

  21. EVALUATION MEASURE: • Engage the parents in the process to be PROACTIVE in their child’s education. • Educational Intervention for at risk students. • Shared responsibility.

RESEARCH: • Only 50.6 percent of black students and 48.7 percent of Latino students have access to home computers, compared to 74.6 percent of white students. • By comparison, 85.5 percent of white students have home computer access, and 77.4 percent can use the Internet at home. • * published in the October 2005 issue of the Economics of Education.

  23. PROGRAM GOALS: • Start date January 2011. • Start at one high school in North & South Portland. • Limit 35 laptops per school. • Provide laptops for improvement in grades. • Survey parents to improve program. • Evaluate and Adjust Key Assumptions.
