  1. NOAA-18 AMSU-A And MHS CALIBRATION Overview Tsan Mo NOAA/NESDIS/ORA Sensor Physics Branch ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val Working Group Meeting August 9, 2005

  2. OUTLINE ● Monitor and improve NOAA-18 AMSU-A /MHS post-launch calibration ● Assess and quantify instrument noises though analyzing calibration target counts and channel measurements ● Monitor instrument anomaly and provide recommended solution ● Provide early demonstration and assessments of NOAA-18 AMSU-A & MHS data quality ● Outstanding Issues: Instrument, On-orbit Verification Plan, & Navigation ● Summary ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  3. Parameters monitored • Calibration Counts: Space & warm counts • Instrument Temperatures: RF Shelf Temp. and RF Mux temperature • Blackbody (BB) PRT temperatures • Other temperature sensors ● Channel Gain ●NET ●Lunar contamination of space counts ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  4. Data Samples ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  5. High Gain ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  6. MHS On-orbit Verification of PRTs T =Max. T – Min. T T ( K) Spec: T < 0.2 K ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  7. MHS NET Specification: 1 K ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  8. Count= Max – Min > 400 counts ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  9. Selection of Optimal MHS Space View (SV) ● Change of offset renders the data useless. ● Optimal SV can’t be determined ● Re-do this test under stable condition ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  10. The Moon also raises ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  11. Trending over 65 days Offset Changed ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  16. NOAA-18 AMSU-A NET ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  17. Scan Position check Off 0.52o ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  18. Selection of Optimum AMSU-A Space Views (SV) ● Data for SV4 were taken under unstable condition ● Optimum SV is determined with data from 3 SVs ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  19. Determination of of Optimal AMSU-A Space Views ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  20. AMSU-A Cal/Val Summary ● Overall AMSU-A calibration is good with quality control flags being properly set whenever there is anomaly in the data stream ● On-orbit AMSU-A NET at all channels meets specification ● AMSU-A2 cold calibration position (#2) count exceeds the nominal value by 26 counts (~0.52o) . ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG

  21. MHS Cal/Val Summary ● Overall MHS calibration is good with quality control flags being properly set whenever anomaly occurs ● The NOAA-18 MHS NET for each channel is better than that of AMSU-B ● Spreads among 4 samples of cold & warm calibration counts exceed 400 counts (at same scan line). Ch. gains are too high ● Optimal Space View can’t be determined due to bad OV data ● Navigation problems ORA NOAA-18 Cal/Val WG
