Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies • Funded by the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (SAMHSA/CSAP) • Assists CSAP grantees—including States, Jurisdictions, and Federally-recognized Tribes and tribal entities—in the application of data-driven decision-making to the selection and implementation of evidence-based practices and programs.

Proposed Outcomes for Today Grantees will : • Deepen understanding of the current requirements of the SPF-SIG grant contracts and evaluation processes • Share successes and challenges in implementation and inform continued technical assistance planning • Begin to develop a plan for sustaining SPF-SIG outcomes at the local level through exploration of basic sustainability concepts

  10. Common Factors in Successful Implementation • Active community leadership and key stakeholder support • Strategies “fit” with community need and are being implemented with fidelity and at the right level of intensity

  11. Common Factors in Successful Implementation • Community has strong structure, skills, capacity and resources to implement chosen programs and strategies • Community is keeping its eye on short-term and long- term outcomes and monitoring progress • Others?

What’s Working Activity • These strategies and an additional one marked “other”, are posted around the room. • On the sticky notes at your table write 2-4 factors (one per note) that are helping you succeed in your community. • Get up and post your successes on the strategies to which they correspond.

Identify Key Challenges • Take a quiet moment to brainstorm a list of challenges your community is facing in implementation • Share your list with your tablemates • Decide as a group on one key challenge to get input on • Find the Case Study Worksheet in your packets and write up your table’s case study • Pass your Case Study to the table on your left • You have 15 minutes to do this!

  15. Live Case Study • At your tables, read the Case Study you’ve been given and brainstorm solutions on the Consultation Worksheet in your packets • Decide on a note-taker and presenter for the Consultation report-out

Sustainability in the SPF means The ability of states and communities to continually apply the SPF process over time to reduce alcohol and other drug-related problems and their associated consumption patterns. • Build prevention capacities/infrastructure at State and community level to sustain community-level outcomes • Sustainability always means ensuring a structure and system for activating leadership and commitment to the issue • Sometimes this means sustaining programs, sometimes not

  19. At the local level, sustain prevention by strengthening: • Organizational capacity • Effectiveness of programs, policies, practices • Community support for prevention

  20. Strategies for Promoting Sustainability • Think about sustainability from the beginning • Build ownership among stakeholders • Track and tout outcomes • Identify program champions • Invest in capacity • Identify diverse resources

Sustainability in the SPF Step 1: Assessment • Institutionalize data sources • Institutionalize Community Readiness tools • Long-term availability of data sources • Enhance data sources and data availability • Maintain ongoing communication between SSA, SEOW and regional and local prevention planning infrastructure

Sustainability in the SPF Step 2: Mobilization • Is there a need for the planning group to organize prevention planning in the future? • Will you need to build a new planning group or enhance the existing group? • Have you identified members from your planning group who are willing to participate in all five steps of the SPF Model?

  23. Sustainability in the SPF Step 3: Planning • Build community members’ capacity to participate in planning and understand the SPF model and data gathering and assessment. • Create mechanism for planning to occur on an ongoing and/or annual basis.

  24. Sustainability in the SPF Step 3: Planning • Communicate results of planning process to community and coalition members. • Ensure planning is clear and open (avoid hidden agendas/favoritism).

  25. Sustainability in the SPFStep 4: Implementation • Cultivate program champions! • Maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders. • Be proactive in engaging potential future partners. • Let community and coalition members know what’s going on.

  26. Sustainability Considerations for SPF Step 5: Evaluation Evaluation is a key component of sustainability. It will allow you to: • Demonstrate outcomes • Recruit champions • Engage new partners • Adjust your strategies to ensure positive results
