Objectives for Today • Students will tell how events are related and how one event causes another. • Students will analyze multiple causes and effects. • Students will ask questions before, during, and after reading. • Asking questions will help the students better understand cause-and-effect relationships.

  3. Cause • A cause is an event that makes something else happen.

  4. Effect • An Effect is something that happens because of an earlier event.

  5. Stated Cause-and-Effect • The reader can locate the cause-and-effect relationship stated in the selection.

  6. Implied Cause-and-Effect Relationships • The reader must utilize clues given by the author to discover the causes and effects in the selection.

  7. Why do authors use cause-and-effect relationships? • Authors use causes and effects to structure text to help show relationships between ideas.

  8. Keep Sea Turtles Safe(Projectable 6.2) • Each year, thousands of people enjoy a day at the beach. They take along food and beverages to snack on. The trash they leave behind can prove deadly to sea turtles.

  9. Keep Sea Turtles Safe(Projectable 6.2) • Plastic bags and food packages may look like exotic foods. If the turtles eat these items, they will become sick and may even die. Some careless people even destroy turtle nests and take their eggs.

  10. Keep Sea Turtles Safe(Projectable 6.2) • Cleaning up your trash and disposing of it properly will help keep sea turtles safe. Never disturb a nest. The average life span of a sea turtle is 80 years. Do your part to help these creatures live a nice long life.
