  1. 2014 STAR JPSS Science Teams Annual Meeting May 12-16, 2014 • NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) Auditorium • 5830 University Research Court, College Park, MD 20740 • Attention: SDR/EDR Team Leads for Selection of Speakers

  2. Directives for the Meeting • NJO has asked STAR to develop consistent approaches for algorithm development and validation independent of processing system. This means there should be common cal/val approach and definitions applied to IDPS, NDE and GCOM processing. Delivered algorithm packages should be system agnostic. Each algorithm project, regardless of processing system, will report out on the algorithm methodology, the validation approach, and current algorithm performance. Algorithm choice is very important and each algorithm lead will state their algorithm recommendation. There are basically two outcomes for algorithms in IDPS:1) the NPOESS algorithm developed for IDPS has evolved into the NOAA endorsed enterprise algorithm, OR 2) the NPOESS algorithm will not meet the level 1 requirement or is not an enterprise algorithm and therefore is replaced. When alternative algorithms and products exist, each team will present: IDPS methodology description and algorithm assessment (show results and assess validation stage); NDE or other methodology description and algorithm assessment (show results and user feedback and assess validation stage); Algorithm decision (include user preference and explanation).

  3. Objectives • Review the progress of the STAR JPSS program over the past year and review objectives of the coming year. • Present results/issues/science from the STAR JPSS science teams including: algorithm validation and maturity status, SNPP science results, plans for the coming year, and progress in preparing for JPSS-1. • Hold individual meetings with the product application teams and the Algorithm Integration Team (AIT) to review algorithm code development and other activities. • Hold individual meetings with the science teams and management to review the work plan, budget, and other management matters for the upcoming Fiscal Year. • Hold splinter meetings to develop plans for improved utilization of selected JPSS products. • Inform the JPSS Program Office and the STAR Management on the status of the program.

  4. Overall Plan of the Meeting • The meeting will start on Monday afternoon (5/12) with opening remarks from Al and other dignitaries. Following opening remarks, a high-level overview presentations from the SDR and EDR team leads are planned (Monday afternoon (5/12) to Tuesday lunch (5/13): Four SDR teams -VIIRS, ATMS, CrIS, OMPS; nine EDR team leads (soundings, ozone, aerosols, clouds, imagery, land, Cryosphere, SST and Ocean Color). Tuesday after lunch session will initiate side meetings where leads refine and discuss detailed activities of the year and define the path forward. The SDR teams will start deliberations from Tuesday afternoon and continued until Wednesday (5/14) lunch. Three parallel sessions, one dedicated for the VIIRS SDRs, one for ATMS/CrIS (in sequential order) , and the other for OMPS are planned. This will be followed by EDR breakout discussions (parallel sessions), viz. VIIRS- Land/Cryosphere; VIIRS Atmosphere; VIIRS Ocean; Soundings, and Ozone) for the rest of the Wednesday afternoon. Thursday (5/15) morning has presentations and/or discussions on GCOM-W; utilization of non-NOAA (foreign and domestic) data; generating blended products; reprocessing and climate applications . After the above, discussions are planned with interested users/groups via late morning breakout sessions. Following these sessions, presentations to facilitate JPSS Ground details (IDPS; NDE; AIT; Research to Operations) are planned, including a tutorial on AIT resources (Thursday afternoon session). This is followed by a theme report discussion on Friday morning with SDR/EDR leads presenting their highlights of their discussions, select presentations on innovative science, open discussion and wrap-up.
