  1. Biology I Chapter I What am I getting myself into??

  2. A LOT of bad jokes from Miss Jones! And now Edgar’s gone… Something’s fishy around here…

  3. 1-1 What is the goal of Science? • To investigate and understand the natural world • To explain events in the natural world • To use those explanations to make useful predictions Its not all geeks!

  4. My dog has diarrhea… Problem… Or is it a PARASITE?! Is it just a sensitive belly? What could be causing it?? The fish he ate at the beach?

  5. How can we find out? • Make observations… he’s acting normally otherwise! • Collect data; take a stool sample (YUM) • Make an inference: he’s always had bad poops , but this time was BAD.

  6. Then what?? • Form a hypothesis! • If I put Makena on parasite medication, then he will get better, because the medication is designed to kill all the parasites.

  7. So… • Stomach medication • Change of diet • Stool sample How will we know which one works??

  8. Variables… How many things did we alter? Does it matter?? WHY?

  9. Then how should we do it? • Pick ONE thing to test… the drugs, the diet, or the stool sample. • That way, each VARIABLE can be eliminated. • How can we make sure its fair?

  10. IV vs. DV • In the previous experiment… each thing tested was the IV • Medicine, diet, stool sample The result is the DV Are the poops better?

  11. A theory… • Is a hypothesis that has been well tested and re-evaluated • Has yet to be proven false • Has been reviewed by many • Is understood to be accepted until disproved

  12. Can you think of any theories? • Evolution • Plate Tectonics • Global Warming

  13. 1.3 Living things… respond to their environment obtain and use materials & energy maintain homeostasis evolve over time are based on genetic code grow and develop Reproduce are made up of cells

  14. Levels of Organization For Living Things #8 #6 #7 #5 #1 #3 #4 #2

  15. Most scientists use the METRIC system. The metric system is scaled on multiples of 10. 1.4 Tools and Procedures

  16. Devices that produce magnified images of structures too small to see with the naked eye Microscopes

  17. Types of Microscopes #1 Compound Light #2 Electron • Light passes through the specimen and uses two lenses to form an image. • Use beams of electrons to see details impossible to see with visible light. SEM TEM Transmission electron microscope Scanning Electron Microscope

  18. Let's Review! • 1 characteristic of living things is that they obtain and use___________ • Levels of organization in a living thing go cell, tissue, organ, ________ • Living specimens can be observed using a _____________ microscope. • The metric system measures things in multiples of _____________. energy organism light ten
