  1. How Many Steps to 10,000 Finding the difference between a number and 10,000 3.3

  2. Guiding Questions • How can understanding place value help you solve addition and subtraction problems with larger numbers?

  3. Imagine • Imagine the 10,000 chart as a giant board. Imagine that a tiny creature is moving along this board. It starts in the upper left corner, steps onto the first square, and moves across a whole row to 100, stepping on every square. So to get to 100, it takes 100 steps. Then it jumps to the beginning of the next row (101), moves across that whole row, and so on. It always moves one square at a time. Sometimes, it moves backwards. You’re going to be solving problems about how many steps it would take to move from a particular square to the end of the board.

  4. Creature Problem • Let’s say the creature is on the square numbered 1,025. Find that square on the 10,000 chart Then figure out how many steps it would have to take to get to the 10,000th square. • Explain your thinking! How did you solve this?

  5. Strategies NUMBER LINE STRATEGY 10,000 – 2,375 = _______ OR 2,357 + ______ = 10,000 +25 +600 +7,000 10,000 2,375 2,400 3,000 7,625

  6. STRATEGIES: Adding up Write each step as a separate equation! Example: 10,000 – 257= ____ OR 257 + ____ = 10,000 257 + 3 = 260 260 + 40 = 300 300 + 700 = 1,000 1,000 + 9,000 = 10,000 10,000 – 257 = 9,743

  7. Algorithm 10,000 - 2,357

  8. Solving Distance Problems • Start at 73. How many steps to 10,000? • Start at 850. How many steps to 10,000? • Start at 3,498. How many steps to 10,000? • Choose a strategy to solve the above problems. Write out the equation as your solution.

  9. Close to 1,000 • The game is played by drawing eight cards and using six of them to make two 3-digit numbers that, when added together, have a sum that is as close to 1,000 as possible. It is OK to go over 1,000. You’re score is going to be the difference between the sum and 1,000 (whether it is greater than or less than 1,000 doesn’t matter). • As you play, think about what strategies you are using to add numbers that equal 1,000, or close to it.

  10. Independent Assignment: What’s The Missing Number? • 4,991 + _________ = 5,000 • 4,991 + ________ = 6,000 • 4,991 + ________ = 7,000 • 4,991 + ________ = 10,00 • 1,212 + _______ = 2,000 • 1,212 + _______ = 5,000 • 1,212 + _______ = 10,000 • 3,385 + _______ = 6,000 • 3,385 + _______ = 8,000 • 3,385 + _______ = 10,000 Due at the end of class! Turn this in to the box. Make sure your name is on it! Copy down all equations first, in case you need to finish this at home.
