  4. Dynastic Cycle • History always repeats itself • New Dynasty claims “Mandate of Heaven” and reaches height • After several generations becomes “Aging Dynasty” and loses mandate • Problems arise, such as rebellion, famine, Invasion • New Dynasty rises

  5. Mandate of Heaven • Shang Di or God gives Dynasty authority to rule • If Dynasty loses moral character or are no longer powerful • They can be overthrown • Ex. Shang by Zhou

  6. Early Dynasties • Shang(1600-1027 BC) • City State, Used Bronze metallurgy, beginnings of ancestor worship and oracle bones, God-Shang Di

  7. Zhou Dynasty (1027-481 BC) • Overthrow Shang, justify with Mandate of Heaven • Book of divination written (I Ching) • Start to Build Great Wall

  8. Qin (481-206 BC) • End Warring States Period • Time of Confucius, Daoism, Legalism, Sun-Tzu Art of War • Unites China First Emperor (Qin Shi Huang) • Elixir/Gov top heavy

  9. Han Dynasty (206-8 AD) • Liu Bang Peasant that becomes emperor • Exam System/1st form of socialism

  10. Emperor Han Wu Di discovers Europe 1,000 years before Marco Polo • Establishes Silk Rte. • Empress Dowager

  11. Tang(618-907 AD) • Created 1st world educated civil service • Inventions: Gun Powder-fireworks, Medicines-comb. Indian and China ideas, coal used

  13. Southern Song • Song Central and South China Dynasty (10-13th) • “Commercial Revolution” Great era of Oceanic Trade • Canton, Extraterritoriality

  14. Advancements: Gunpowder to explosive weapons, Abacus, paper money, etc. • Foot binding-show wealth of husband

  15. Jin(1127-1279 AD) • Invaders from the north (foreign rule) • Confucianism rejects other religions

  16. Yuan(1279-1368 AD) • Mongol Invasions • Kublai Khan conquers Southern China (Song) • Invades Japan (Kami-Typhoon)

  17. Extensive Transportation Systems • Reestablishes Silk Rte. Trade flourishes • Ex. Marco Polo

  18. Ming (1368-1644 AD) • Mongols fighting among each other • Return to strictly Chinese rule • Brought back Examinations • Built Forbidden City

  19. Kowtow • 7 Great Maritime expeditions • 1405-1433 • Reached Africa, Middle East, etc. • Size, 517 ft long • Tribute

In 1424 a Portuguese map had the islands of Puerto Rico, etc. on it • Indians in California, Central, South America, and in Maine have Modern Chinese DNA • Asiatic Chickens were seen in America when Europeans arrived (writing). • Maize (Unique to the Americas) was seen transplanted in Asia in the 1430’s.

Sloths from South America were seen in China as forms of Tribute in the 1430’s. • Evidence of a Chinese Junk Shipwreck was found in San Francisco Bay. • Linguistic and DNA evidence that a Chinese colony was est. from the survivors. • Massachusetts Stone are a lined in a geometric pattern and have the inscription of a Buddha on them.
