Background information • Fourth year in science required by HB 1 for students graduating on the Recommended Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program • College readiness indicator • Plan applies to students who entered eighth grade in 2006-2007 (present sophomores) • Course requirements include: • Biology • Chemistry • Physics • Additional lab-based course from SBOE approved list

  3. Background Information Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) will fulfill science credit until the entering ninth grade class of the 2011-12 school year, but it cannot be taken as a senior level course.

Implications for HEB • Teacher certification issues at the high school level • Biology and Life Science certified teachers will have to add “Science: 8-12” certification to their certificates to be eligible to teach chemistry, physics and some CTE options • Bell High School = 5 teachers/coaches • Trinity High School = 6 teachers/coaches • Personnel Requirements • 4 full time equivalents, 2 at each high school (2011-2012 budget) • Lab Facilities • 4 additional science classrooms, 2 at each high school (2011-2012 budget) • Lab Equipment • Additional lab equipment at junior high and high schools (2010-2011 budget)

Timeline for Addressing Implications • 2008-2009 • September • Review with Cabinet implications of revised science course sequence, including personnel costs, science classroom needs, materials costs, and certification issues • November • Meet with high school principals and review staffing implications, science classroom needs, and certification issues • Present science course sequence to Board of Trustees • Meet individually with teachers and make them aware of potential certification issues • February • Offer certification preparation courses

Timeline for Addressing Implications • 2009-2010 • Fall and Spring • Offer certification preparation courses • Assist teachers with registration for TExES • Reimburse teachers for registration and testing fees • HEB will pay for one testing session • Test may be taken online every week • Assist teachers in adding Science: Grades 8-12 certification • Reimburse teachers for adding Science: Grades 8-12 to certificate

  11. Timeline for Addressing Implications • 2010-2011 • November • Final opportunity to take and pass the Science: Grades 8-12 TExEs to be eligible for February contract recommendation
