  2. We hope you take away ideas about… • What historical thinking is about and where it might fit with your curriculum outcomes/objectives • How to make history and social studies more engaging and interesting for your students by using more primary sources from SK Archives • Professional development ideas to support your work • Where to access already created student resources connected to SK primary source archival material • How Saskatchewan Archives can further support your work with students

  3. Why Historical Thinking? Do your students look like this? Do you sound like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxPVyieptwA

  4. Engagement • Exhilaration when researchers discover history through original documents. • Student researching a topic that interests them + interesting primary sources = Winning Combination

  5. History Is Made By Humans • Looking at primary sources as evidence helps put the reality back into the story.

  6. Critical Thinking • Invite students to examine the traces of history – the leftovers of the past – as clues to support an interpretation of what happened in their period of study.

  7. Critical Thinking • Encourage students to critique the sources that the information comes from. • Encourage students to “go to the source” and understand the context of the record themselves, rather than relying on a secondary source’s analysis & interpretation.
