  2. Physical Characteristics • Lake temperatures vary depending on where they are located. • Lake Ontario Average temp. of 63 degrees Depth of 280 feet it is a fresh water lake. However, lakes with salt, the salt is closer to the bottom where it is colder, due to salt being denser than water. Lakes mainly receive water from rivers/streams, rain, the ocean or any other near bodies of water that are connected to the lake. Also from melted snow up in mountains.

  3. Plants and Animals • Fish • Sharks • Birds/ducks • Algae • Grass • Turtles • Bugs/arthropods (spiders) • Trees/shrubs • Algae, phytoplankton, and bugs are the base of the food chain

  4. Zones • Littoral- Is near the shore where the sun reaches the sediment and allows aquatic plants to grow. • Limnetic- an open water area where light does not penetrate the bottom • Euphotic- the layer from the surface to where it is too dark for photosynthesis.

  5. Interesting facts • The dead sea is the lowest point on earth and the saltiest lake • Great lakes together form the largest • There are at least 30 million lakes in Canada • The great lakes water are used for up to 90% of Americas water
