DigestiveSystem • Made up of the digestive tract,the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. • A layer of smooth muscle helps break down food and move it along the tract. • The gallbladder stores the liver’s digestive juices until they are needed in the intestine. • Nervous and circulatory systems also play major roles in the digestive system.

  3. How is food digested? • Digestion involves mixing food with digestive juices. • Digestion begins in the mouth, with an enzyme called amylase. • Once the swallow begins, it becomes involuntary and proceeds under the control of the nerves.

  4. Why is digestion important? • Process by which food and drink are broken down into their smallest parts. • The body can use them to build and nourish cells and to provide energy. • When you eat, food is not in a form that the body can use. to cells.
