  2. Hebrews 11 :4 By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

  3. Genesis 34:7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter.

  4. Genesis 34:25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.

  5. 1 Samuel 18:8 Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. "They have credited David with tens of thousands," he thought, "but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?"

  6. 1 Samuel 18:10-11 Saul had a spear in his hand and he hurled it, saying to himself, "I'll pin David to the wall." But David eluded him twice.

  11. The Three Theories • They were angels • They were powerful kings • Sons of God = godly men (Sethites) Daughters of men = ungodly women (Cainites)

  12. Job 1:6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

  13. Job 2:1 On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him.

  14. Psalm 29:1 A psalm of David. Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

  15. Jude 6-7 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-- these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

  16. Jude 6-7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.

  17. Mark 12:25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

  18. Psalm 82:6-7 "I said, 'You are "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.' But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler."

  19. 2 Samuel 7:14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. (God’s covenant with David)

  20. Psalm 2:7 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father.

  21. Exodus 4:22 Then say to Pharaoh, 'This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son.

  22. Deuteronomy 14:1 You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead,

  23. 120 Years • Joseph – 110 years (Genesis 50:26) • Moses – 120 years (Deuteronomy 34:7) • Joshua – 110 years (Joshua 24:29) • Aaron – 123 years (Numbers 33:39)

  24. Numbers 13:32-33 All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."

  25. Exodus 33:12 Moses said to the LORD, "You have been telling me, 'Lead these people,' but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, 'I know you by name and you have found favor with me.'

  26. Judges 6:17-18 Gideon replied, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you." And the LORD said, "I will wait until you return."

  27. Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.

  28. “Walked with God.” This phrase puts Noah on a par with Enoch (5:22, 24), the only other named individual to have walked with (ta ûlhth) God. Abraham, Isaac and godly kings “walked before” God (17:1; 48:15; 2 Kgs 20:3). • Wenham, Gordon J., Word Biblical Commentary, Volume 1: Genesis 1-15, (Dallas, Texas: Word Books, Publisher) 1998.

  29. “Violence” denotes any antisocial, unneighborly activity. Very often it involves the use of brute force, but it may just be the exploitation of the weak by the powerful or the poor by the rich (e.g., Amos 6:1–3), or the naive by the clever (Prov 16:29). • Wenham, Gordon J., Word Biblical Commentary, Volume 1: Genesis 1-15, (Dallas, Texas: Word Books, Publisher) 1998.

  30. Chamas is cold-blooded and unscrupulous infringement of the personal rights of others, motivated by greed and hate and often making use of physical violence and brutality. Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, 4:482)

  31. The transformation of oriental theology found in chaps. 1–5 continues in 6:1–4. Stories of superhuman demigods like Gilgamesh were a commonplace, and intercourse with the divine was regularly sought in the fertility cults of Canaan and the sacred marriage rites of Mesopotamia.

  32. Through such procedures men sought to achieve enhanced earthly life and even eternal life. But to Hebrew thinking such ideas were utterly abhorrent. • Wenham, Gordon J., Word Biblical Commentary, Volume 1: Genesis 1-15, (Dallas, Texas: Word Books, Publisher) 1998.

  33. … the pettiness of the gods’ motives in destroying mankind contrasts starkly with the stern moral tone of the biblical account. Man is damned in the latter not for making noise but because of his incorrigible evil for ruining the earth and committing violence. • Wenham, Gordon J., Word Biblical Commentary, Volume 1: Genesis 1-15, (Dallas, Texas: Word Books, Publisher) 1998.
