  5. Why people are coming to the U.S.? • Believe in the promise of a better life if they come to America • No more poverty, famine • No land shortages • No Religious persecution • No Political persecution

  6. Before 1860, most immigrants from northern and western Europe. After 1860, increasing numbers came from southern and eastern Europe, Asia (China, Japan), the Caribbean islands (Jamaica, Cuba) and Mexico Who’s Coming???

  7. Why do you think the “new immigrants” after 1890 stood out more than the “old immigrants”?

  8. Stood Out Because: • Look different • Speak different languages • Holds different customs and traditions • Food, holidays, religion, etc…

  9. How are the Immigrants coming to the U.S.? • Almost all immigrants traveled by steamship. • Crossing the Atlantic took about 1 week • Crossing the Pacific took about 3 weeks • The long sea journey was stormy, uncomfortable and frightening. • Living conditions weren’t great!!!

Ellis Island East Coast inspection center Had to pass a physical exam Needed proper documents Needed to pass a literacy test Needed to prove that they could work Angel Island West Coast inspection center at San Francisco Primarily Chinese passed through Angel Island Facility was filthy, and confined almost like prisoners Just Before Entering the U.S., You needed to be inspected!!!

  11. How do you think the new immigrants were received by “native” Americans?

The Rise of Nativism • One negative response to the increase in immigration was nativism: favoritism towards native-born Americans. • They demanded immigration restrictions • Wanted to keep the “undesirables” out • Example: • Chinese Exclusion Act passed in 1882, banning all Chinese immigrants to the U.S. • Quotas passed (Only a set # of immigrants allowed)
