  1. Warm Up – Read the poem on the table and answer the following questions 1. In Paragraph 2, Whitman states that “men and women perceive the beauty” of nature just as well as the poet does. The role of the poet, then, is to • help people contemplate nature • unite different people in appreciation of nature • show a higher meaning of nature • describe the details of nature 2. When the author states that poems’ formal aspects “bud from them as unerringly and loosely as lilacs or roses on a bush,” he is using a poetic device called • simile • iambic pentameter • personification • Onomatopoeia Read the sentence below. The rhyme and uniformity of perfect poems show the free growth of metrical laws and bud from them as unerringly and loosely as lilacs or roses on a bush . . . 3. The main idea of this passage is that poetry • is subject to the laws of meter and rhyme • is created through the vision of the poet • often describes natural objects • does not appeal to all people equally 4. Based on the passage, the reader could MOST logically predict that Whitman’s own poetry. • is frequently set to music • follows laws of rhythm and meter • is not tied to formal requirements • concerns itself only with natural occurrences
