  1. The Lord’s Prayer

  2. Thy Kingdom Come • Thy will be done

  3. You are in God’s Kingdom if • You treat God as your King

  4. Treating God as king means: • Doing God’s will – • So the Lord’s Prayer includes • “Thy will be done.”

  5. Sometimes we don’t do God’s will • Which means we are saying“I don’t want you to be my king”which means“I don’t want be in your kingdom” So the Lord’s prayer also includes: “Forgive us your trespasses”

  6. So Luther explains: • “Thy kingdom come” means: • That God will be King no matter what • ---- the question is, will he be your king?

  7. God’s Kingdom comes: • In the present and in the future: • In the present, God’s Kingdom is invisible, because it is in your heart; it is not obvious who is putting God in first place • On Judgment day, God’s Kingdom will be visible to everyone --- we will know who has put God first.

  8. The present, invisible Kingdom: • Jesus said, “The kingdom of God not coming with signs to be observed, Nor will people say, Look! Here [it is]! or, See, [it is] there! For behold, the kingdom of God is within you [in your hearts] and among you [surrounding you]. Luke 17:20-21 Amplified Bible

  9. The future, visible kingdom • Jesus said about himself, “When the Son of Man comes in his glory … all the nations will be gathered before him … then the king will say to those on his right, “come you who are blessed by my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world … and these will go in to eternal life.” • Matthew 25:31-46

  10. So Luther continues: • That God’s kingdom comes thorugh the power of the Holy Spirit, giving us the grace to believe his God’s word, and to live a life based on putting God first

  11. So when you pray • “Thy kingdom come” • You are asking God to take over in your heart, • Which means you want God to move you to do His will. • So Luther continues:

  12. Thy will be done -- • Means that even though God will get His way, the question is --- • Will God get his way with me?

  13. How is God’s will done? • God’s will is done • When he ruins the plans of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, • Which do not want us to regard God’ as special, • Or to let God rule as King in our lives.

  14. And … • When God keeps us firm in his word and faith until we die. • This is God’sgood and gracious will.

  15. By the way: • The Bible uses two terms for the kingdom. • Luke calls it “Kingdom of God” • Matthew calls it “Kingdom of Heaven” • These mean the same thing.
