OPEN SESSION NA49: last data-taking in 2002 A-A: Pb-Pb energy scans, Si-Si and C-C collisions with fragment beams.Several observations are interpreted as signs for new physics (QGP): e.g. ‘horn’ in K/p ratio versus s.Many papers have been published. pp, pA: Systematic studies of pp, pp, pA and pA have been performed. First paper published in October. pp and pA extrapolations allow to explainobservations in A-A without new physics. Collaboration has 23 groups (3 new ones!), 94 physicists. Many analyses ongoing. LoI for new pp, pA and AA experiment will be submitted to next SPSC. Ask to stay on the flooruntil future is clarified. Request 1 wk of beam in 2006. NA49 must reserve resources (M&P) for dismounting when the time has come. Ask for encouragement for analysis and continued IT support. Summary SPSC meeting November 2005 for EA section meeting

3. Request 150 MeV beam (instead of 50 MeV): ICARUS: ICARUS has been approved (after CNGS) for T3000 = T600 + 2x T1200. Ultimate aim of collaboration: very massive detectors of several tens of kilotons. Following delays due to LNGS problems and lack of funding from outside Italy,ICARUS will be ‘unable to fulfil the deliverables for CNGS-2’ , i.e. funding for the T1200 modules has been stopped.There is no physics case left for neutrino oscillations studies with T600 alone (1 evt only!). OPERA is from now on the main user in CNGS, ICARUS runs parasitically. AD4: AD4 has demonstrated that the therapeutic effect of pbar is higher than for p or C. Further studies would profit from higher beam energy: longer plateau, longer penetration depth, better plateau-peak separation. Summary SPSC meeting November 2005 for EA section meeting

4. P326 (“NA48/3”): The collaboration has addressed all and resolved most of the questions from the refereesin a very professional and serious manner. This concerns questions on the vacuum requirement, Gigatracker, anti-counters, Liquid Krypton calorimeter and R&D program. A satisfactory list of milestones for the R&D program has been provided. The Committee rates this as a top-ranking candidate experiment, but the collaborationmust be strengthened before a full approval can be considered. CERN is considered the most appropriate, if not only place where such an experiment can be done. In the meantime the SPSC endorses the R&D program and recommends the beam timein 2006 for beam tests in ECN3 and Cedar tests in EHN1. The LKR tests in the K12 beamare an important milestone. In the meantime the SPSC will discuss with the CERN management how an official statuscan be given to the R&D program. They ask CERN to provide the necessary infrastructure and support. 5. NA49: The SPSC appreciates the full set of results from the AA program and the very high quality and importance of the pp and pA data, which are relevant for the interpretationof the AA data. The committee is looking forward to more papers on both AA and pp&pAdata and encourages a coherent analysis of all data. Every effort should be made by the collaboration to ensure speedy publication of theremaining pp and pA data and that sufficient resources are available to ensure this. The SPSC recommends that the NA49 detector can stay on the floor until the future of the program has been clarified (in about 1 year from now). The SPSC recommends continued IT support for 1 year at the present level. COMPASS: The upgrades of both the polarised target magnet and the RICH are progressing well.The SPSC acknowledges the efforts made and the respecting of the schedule. The schedule is still tight and close monitoring of the progress continues. The SPSC appreciates the submission of the paper on DG/G from high-pt pairs. 6. OTHER ISSUES: OPERA has some resource problems that may impact on the running in 2007.The 2006 run is not affected and half the target mass will be available by July 2006. The SPSC keeps monitoring closely the progress and wants regular updates on thescanning efficiency and its effect on the S/B ratio. DIRAC is progressing with its installation as planned A.O.B.: • CALICE will be refereed and reviewed at the January meeting (see above) • A LOI from the PAX collaboration (at FAIR) for studies at the AD was received . This has major implications for the AD, if at all possible. S.Baird will be contacted by John Dainton to set up a scheme how to judge and advice.
