  2. Activity • Place the major players of WWI on the Risk Board Game • Obviously the countries are a little skewed but place them as accurately as you can.

  3. Causes of WWI • Nationalism • Imperialism • Alliances • Arms Race • African Crises • Assassination

  4. Causes of WWI • Nationalism-Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation. • Imperialism-The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations.

  5. Causes of WWI • Alliances-The Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente • Countries were becoming wary of each other as they each tried to expand their empires and build up arms • Arms Race-As a result of this distrust countries began to build larger standing armies and navies. • E.g.-The armies of France and Germany doubled just shortly before WWI.

  6. Causes of WWI • African Crises-These alliances clash in areas such as Morocco and Bosnia • Morocco-A French province declares independence and is backed by Germany. France is backed by Britain but a solution was reached. • Bosnia-Austria-Hungary wanted to annex Bosnia but so did Serbia. So Russia who backed Serbia mobilized and this caused Germany who was allied with Austria-Hungary to mobilize as well.

Causes of WWI • Assassination-The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand on June 28, 1914. • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia • July 29 Russia declares war on Germany • August 1st Germany declares war on Russia • August 3rd Germany declares war on France • Britain entered the war after Germany invaded Belgium.

Causes of WWII • Treaty of Versailles • 1)Germany was not allowed to have a military • 2) German ships used for trading were given to the allies • 3) Germany was forced to give up territories in Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. • 4) Germany was ordered to pay $33 billion dollars in war damages.

Causes of WWII • Great Depression • Caused a large number of unemployment and high inflation in Germany • The new democratic Weimar government was unable to solve these dilemmas and was blamed for the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles. • Allies also had huge debts and problems as a result of the depression and the first war.

  12. Causes of WWII • Failure of the League of Nations • Was unable to reinforce the treaty of Versailles • Britain and France still reeling from the first WWI simply continued to appease Germany in light of various abuses to the treaty of Versailles • U.S. isolationism

  13. Causes of WWII • Nationalism • Hitler wanted to unite all German people under one nation • Lebensraum-Hitler’s theory of living space for the German people and the reason behind his expansionist ideas.
