Environment and Security in South Eastern Europe: Improving regional cooperation for risk management from pollution hotspots as well as the transboundary management of shared natural resources Project: • To reduce trans-boundary environmental and human safety risks posed by sub-standard mining operations in the SEE region • To encourage regional co-operation for trans-boundary mountain protected areas in SEE Overall Project Objective

Management of Trans-boundary Natural Resources • Improving regional cooperation for the transboundary management of shared natural resources in South Eastern Europe • Illegal Logging in SEE and EE: Governance, Implementation and Enforcement • Cooperation for the Protection and Sustainable Development of Mountain Areas in the SEE region • Reducing the impact of agriculture in the Prespa Park Region (UNDP FYR Macedonia) • Network Development of Local Actors from the Sava River Basin on Water resource Management • Bi-/multilateral arrangements for prevention of transboundary environmental conflicts: the Timok River • Preparation of the Adriatic Sea Partnership • Walk on the Wild Side of Life: Border Police explore the joint natural heritage of the Green Belt • Sustainable Management of the International Waters - Prespa Lake • Towards a legal regime for flood management in UNECE region

The transboundary mountain areas ENVSEC should be addressing first: • Sharr/Sara Mountains and Korabi (Serbia (Kosovo)/Albania/Macedonia) • Bjeshket e Nemuna/Prokletije Mountains (Albania/Serbia (Kosovo)/Montenegro) • Orjen – Snjeznica (Bosnia and Herzegovina/Croatia/Montenegro) • Vlahina – Malesevska – Belasica (Macedonia/Greece/Bulgaria) • Sutjeska – Durmitor – Tara river valley (Bosnia and Herzegovina/Montenegro) • West Stara Planina (Serbia/Bulgaria) • Tara Planina – Drina (Bosnia and Herzegovina/Serbia) • Osogovsky Planine/Ossogovo (Macedonia/Bulgaria) (in terms of feasibility, readiness, urgency, commitment etc.)

  8. Joint work within the Dinaric Arc Initiative (DAI) UNDP – offices in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia Next DAI meeting 18-19 November, Vienna, hosted by UNEP

Cross-cutting issues (awareness, information, education, etc) • Follow-up support for AIMS (Network of MEAs Senior Officials and Legal Experts for South Eastern Europe) • Postgraduate Courseon Environment, Security and Diplomacy – Environmental Diplomacy • Transboundary environmental governance in Southeastern and Eastern Europe • Energy and Environmental Challenges to Security • Stakeholder participation in decision making in the SEE region • Establishment of an Aarhus Public Environmental Information Centre in promoting access to information and public involvement in decision making • Ensuring Public Participation in Environmental Impact Assessments/Strategic Environmental Assessments • Bridging the Gaps: Enhancing Implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements in the Balkans
