  2. Objectives • To explore the use of voice volume, pitch, rate, and quality as assets to your speaking • To achieve a pleasing natural voice quality when speaking • Time: five to seven minutes

  3. Using Your Voice • Voice influences us five times than spoken words. It means that we are more influenced by how a speaker talks than by what a speaker says. • A good speaking voice should be balanced among volume, pitch, rate, and sound quality.

  4. Using Your Voice • Volume: Project proper volume voice to your audience. Vary your voice volume to add emphasis or dramatic impact to your speeches. • Pitch: Vary pitch of voice to convey emotion and conviction. Avoid high or flat pitches. • Rate: The most effective speaking rate is 125-160 words a minute. However, you need to adjust the rate based on the size of the audience. Vary your rate to emphasize your points. • Quality: Relax your throat and try to convey friendliness, confidence, and a desire to communicate.

  5. A Good Speaking Voice • The tone is pleasant, conveying a sense of friendliness. • Reflecting the true personality and sincerity of the speaker. • Having strength and force. • Never sounding monotonous or emotionless. • Proper volume and clear articulation.

  6. Voice Practice • Showing friendliness and sincerity  I consider you my best friend. Thank you very much for helping me when I am alone. • Showing anger and unfriendliness  My god! You took my bag without my permission and now you are telling me that you lost it? Gee! • Showing conviction  If we all spend two hours every day studying English, our English will become much better and better. Let’s do it from today and let’s improve our English together!

  7. Speech Preparation and Rehearse • Choose a topic that gives you much chance to vary your voice. • Try to use different voice while you are preparing your speech. • The best strategy is to record your speech and replay it. It helps you realize how the audience may feel about your speech.
