  2. Informational Text • The purpose of Informational Text is to share information. • The information can be simple or complex. • Informational Text is everywhere !

  3. Consumer Documents • Advertisements-tell you what is available to buy and how much it costs. • Schedules • Labels • Warranties • Contracts • Instruction Manuals • Technical Directions

  4. Workplace Documents • Documents you encounter on a job. • Business letter • Application • Employment Contract • Work Permit • Tax & Insurance Forms • Employee Manual • Memorandums & Email Memos

  5. Public Documents • One purpose-Supply citizens with information that may be of interest to them. • Can relate to schools, churches, government agencies, the courts, etc. • Typically most citizens get their public information from one source, NEWSPAPERS.

  6. The Big Difference!! • Fiction has a narrator to guide you. • Informational Text YOU are the narrator.

  7. Tips for Reading Informational • Numbered steps- tell you what to do and in what order to do it. • Headings- Let you know a new topic is being introduced. • Boldface/italic words- Alert you to an important word or definition.

  8. Tips for Reading Informational • Graphics- maps, charts, graphs, illustrations. • These graphics can contain important information!

  9. Tips for Informational Text • Phrases such as on the other hand, by comparison, by contrast, or still others believe often introduce the opposite of what came before it. • Think-Comparison of items or ideas.

  10. Tips for Informational Text • Phrases and words such as consequently, as a result, this results in, & therefore explain the effects of something. • Think- Cause & Effect

  11. Technical Directions • Also a type of informational text • Contain step-by-step instructions that explain how to accomplish a task.
