  1. Camille Edwards on Being Confident Versus Cocky Camille Edwards

  2. Camille Edwards As a leader in the local television broadcast world, Camille Edwards interviewed hundreds of job candidates for various positions in the newsrooms she led across the country.

  3. Camille Edwards If she liked a candidate, she would typically have her boss talk with the person.

  4. Camille Edwards One thing she consistently heard over the years was the word “cocky” used to describe some candidates.

  5. Camille Edwards According to Edwards, almost all of the time cocky was used to describe an African American male who was interviewing for a job.

  6. Camille Edwards “I always pushed back and asked why they were using that word to describe them?” says Edwards.

  7. Camille Edwards When digging deeper by asking questions of her bosses, she discovers that in fact the person was confident in their abilities, not cocky.

  8. Camille Edwards “I kid you not, cocky was used versus confident in most cases when it was an African American man.”

  9. Camille Edwards Just because someone is confident in their abilities doesn’t mean they are cocky. Camille Edwards cautions the use of that word and to only use it to describe someone only when it truly applies.

  10. Thank You.
