  10. Required Courses Arts • You will need to take at least 2 credits listed on page 7 under The Arts before graduation • If you are planning on attending a 4 year college right after high school, most colleges require 3 credits of Fine Arts, which are usually any Art or Music Courses

  12. Electives • Once you have registered for all required classes, the remainder of the classes you register for are electives • Choose electives based on the following criteria: Courses that will help you…. • prepare for college • prepare for your future career

  13. 916Classes • 916 Career & Technical classes are offered at Century college for high school credit • Courses are taken all year during 1st & 2nd hour and replace 6 elective credits in the student’s schedule • Courses are available on a first come, first served basis – no minimum GPA requirement • Students may pick up applications in the Guidance Office after receiving their registration materials on Jan. 15th (do not need an appointment – secretaries have applications) • Some common programs: EMT, Dental Asst.,Food Service, Law Enforcement, Cosmetology, Animal Science, Auto Technology, Computers, Graphic Design • Register for 18 other classes at Tartan and drop classes as needed after you find out you were accepted into the program

College Credit • AP = Advanced Placement • - classes @ Tartan; college must accept final exam score to earn college credit • CIS = College in the Schools • - classes @ Tartan; students can • earn U of M credits • Many business classes earn a student • community college credits (see book) • PSEO = Post Secondary • Enrollment Options • - classes @ college

PSEO • Application deadlines for some schools are in early spring • Need to be in top third of your class to be eligible • Please check with the colleges about deadlines • Meet with your counselor to receive required paperwork and information • Register for 18 classes at Tartan as if you will be here (drop for college later)

College Requirements • Some colleges require high school courses beyond what is required to receive a high school diploma • Typical admission requirements are listed on page 10 - please see the individual college’s website for specific admission requirements • Example: most colleges require 4 years of English, 1 year of fine arts, and 2-3 years of world language for admission (Tartan requires 3 2/3 years of English, 2/3 year of fine arts, and 0 years of world language for graduation) • U of M is requiring students to take 4 years of math starting with the class of 2015

IMPORTANT!!! • Choose 18 courses no matter what!You must also choose 4 alternatives in case any of your 1st choice electives are not offered or do not fit into your schedule • Choose 18 credits and 4 alternates even if: • you are applying to be in DECA, BPA or Skills. • you are applying for PSEO • you are applying for 916 classes • you are planning on being a TA

  18. Schedule Changes Qualifies Doesn’t Qualify • Change Teachers • Change Lunches • “Don’t like the elective anymore” • Change Hours • Medical or physical • restrictions • Lack of prerequisite • You were placed in the • wrong level of a class • A class is missing or • two classes show in • the same hour

  19. Online Registration • You will be registering online this year • Follow instructions listed on page 5 to register • Registration window will be open from 1/15-1/29 • You need to discuss your choices with your parents/guardians before registering • If you do not have internet access at home, you may register using the computers in the library or Guidance Office
