Populations

Populations. A group of the same species Types of growth: Exponential Logistic (carrying capacity). Exponential growth. Birth rate much higher than death rate Population growth is not inhibited. If this was a human population, what would be an explanation for this kind of growth? .

  1. Populations • A group of the same species • Types of growth: • Exponential • Logistic (carrying capacity)

  2. Exponential growth • Birth rate much higher than death rate • Population growth is not inhibited If this was a human population, what would be an explanation for this kind of growth?

  3. Carrying capacity • Population growth is limited by limiting factors (factors that limit the number of organisms in an area) • Density dependent: depends on the number of organisms living in an area (competition, disease, water, shelter) • Density independent: does not depend on number of organisms living in an area (climate, natural disasters)

  4. Measuring populations • Population density: • Number of organisms of the same species in a particular area (#/area) • Population distribution: • Random/dispersed • clumped • Uniform/spaced

  5. Uniform/spaced Random Clumped
