  2. Review! • Population - individuals of the same species that live in the same area at the same time • Example - the human population of Grapevine, TX

  3. Characteristics of Populations • Population size • Number of individuals • Population density • Number of individuals in an area • Dispersion • How individuals are arranged in space

  4. Types of Dispersion

  5. Population Growth = # births - # deaths • More births than deaths =growth • More death than births=shrinks

  6. Exp. Growth-curve in which the rate of pop growth stays the same, as a result pop size increases steadily. Logistic growth-exponential growth is limited by a density-dependent factor Growth Curves

  7. Carrying Capacity (K) • # of individuals the environment can sustain Carrying capacity

  8. Density-Dependent Factors • Limited Resources • Food • Water • Shelter • These resources are DDF b/c the rate at which they become depleted depends upon the population density of the pop that uses them. • When limited resources become depleted, population growth slows

  9. Density-Independent Factors • Environmental conditions that limit population growth • Weather • Climate

  10. r- and K-Strategists • r-strategists • Small • Reproduce often in large #’s • Unstable environment • Exponential growth • ex: mice, cockroaches • K-strategists • Large • Reproduce less frequently, in small #’s (parental care) • Stable environment • Logistic growth • ex: elephants, humpback whales, humans
