  2. What is History? • It is the study of past events that involved or affected people, based on the interpretation of evidence • History is a discipline that focuses on the study of change over time, and is most concerned with the question, why? (Echoes, 4).

Methods of Historical Inquiry: Gathering Evidence • Historians rely on two types of resources: • Primary Sources -accounts recorded at the time of an event -Examples: Diaries, Eyewitness Accounts, Government Records, Ships’ Logs, Newspaper Articles, Non-written sources (pottery pieces, cave paintings, etc...) -raw, unprocessed data is used to interpret the past

  5. Methods of Historical Inquiry: Gathering Evidence • Secondary Sources • Accounts based on research and analysis • Examples: Books, journals*, film • Provide a context for research and help in the beginning point of a research process

  6. The Role of Archaeology • The process that provides scholars with primary data • Problem oriented • Excavate to solve problem or test hypothesis • Defined as, “The set of methods used to extract information regarding the past from the earth and sea. (Echoes, 6).

  7. What about Bias? • Bias:"A predisposition or a preconceived opinion that prevents a person from impartially evaluating facts that have been presented for determination; a prejudice.“ (Oxford Dictionary, 2009). • Example: Tom the Tinker

  8. Historical Significance • Key Strategy....analyzing historical significance to determine sequence of events and explain the importance • In this class, regular discussions on historical significance and issue based questions to practice analysis and interpretation of events in history
