  1. Risk Factors for CHD L.O – Describe the global distribution of CHD and the risk factors associated with it.

  2. Global Distribution of CHD As you can see, the deaths from CHD are more frequent in some countries than others. Why do you think this is?

  3. Risk Factors for CHD • Diet • Blood Pressure • Exercise • Smoking • Genetic Influences Use your textbooks to explain how these factors are linked to CHD.

  4. BMI • Body Mass Index • Calculated by using the following formula: Weight (kg) Height (m)² • There are 2 ways to calculate whether a person is overweight – BMI or waist-to-hip ratio. • A person considered ‘ideal’ will have a BMI between 19-24.9. a person with a BMI of 25 and over is considered to be overweight and if they are higher than 30 then they are said to be obese.

  5. Fat Distribution • BMI is a useful calculation however, fat distribution is also important. People with a lot of fat around their middle are more at risk than others. • People who are ‘apple shaped’ are said to have ‘central adiposity’ and are most at risk. • A healthy man should have a waist measurement of no more than 94cm and a woman should have a measurement of no more than 80cm.

  6. Waist – to – hip ratio • Measure the waist circumference at the height of the navel and the hips around the widest point. • Divide the waist measurement by the hip measurement. • Ideally the ratio should be 1.0 or less in men and 0.8 or less in women.

  7. TASK • List the risk factors for CHD under the following headings: • Environmental • Behavioural • Social • Genetic factors
